Completely isolated by NOD32

After being impressed with the results of my research I decided to replace my AVG anti-virus installation with NOD32.

I uninstalled AVG, then downloaded and installed the trial version of "ESET NOD32® Antivirus 3.0".

The result was a quite a shock!

Until I subsequently uninstalled NOD32 I was unable to display any websites in either Firefox or Internet Explorer, or received any e-mail from my POP3 providers.

My research didn't turn up anything like this, so I'm chasing up an explanation here before abandoning the product altogether.

Any suggestions?

 

Yes, use the AVG uninstall tool. Google it. It's on the AVG website.

 

Didn't you have Norton installed prior to AVG?

 

Also, going from one type of real-time protection to another can often result in corrupting the winsock (the tool that allows Windows to connect to the outside world)

If you are using Windows XP, you can download a free tool called winsockxpfix.

I have to use this a lot in my career when moving customers from 1 software to Eset.

Maybe something to try.

 

Made no difference -- still blocked as previously described.

 

Installing Nortons is something I reserve as an act of vengeance against my worst enemies.

Never had any version of Norton's on my PC.

 

I haven't tried this yet because I'm reluctant to risk screwing up something that already works. My concern is: How can Winsock be corrupted if simply removing NOD32 returns me to normal?

By the way, I should have said before: I'm running Windows XP Pro patched right up to date.

Also, with NOD32 installed, I'm not completely isolated from the Internet -- there is connectivity. I can ping external domains, send POP3 e-mail but not receive any, and I can usually view my ISPs Web site, but none others.
