    I´ve tried it in 2 different occasions in order to restore the GRUB in a dual-boot system (Windows overwrited the mbr after re-installed), but it failed both times... that's my experience.

    I always make a grub rescue disk, after every kernel update. If for some reason you can't boot to your grub menu, use the bootable rescue disk.
    You need xorriso installed.
    Then in terminal enter grub-mkrescue --output=rescue.iso /boot/grub no need for sudo. That will place a rescue.iso in your ~/
    Burn it to CD.
    Test by booting from the rescue CD. You will get a grub prompt.
    Then enter configfile /grub.cfg at the grub prompt to boot into your grub menu where you can select the kernel you want to boot.

    Thanks for the tip :thumb:

    I´ve found that an easy way to solve that problem is:

    1- boot from Puppy Linux;

    2- go to System>Grub4DOS;

    3- read and follow the windows

    The boot loader looks different but it works!

    About Boot Repair Disk, i see by googling around that it is a very recommended tool...

    Hello Ocky,

    I am very much interested in creating a grub rescue disk. Does your method work with the following?

    1. Specific Linux distribution?

    2. or just any Linux distribution?

    3. Classic grub?

    4. Grub2?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi, All 'Buntus starting with Lucid Lynx and only Grub2. For 9.10 versions see my thread here (moon_raker=Ocky)
    Very useful to reinstall grub for instance.
