No pop-up ad. Rarely there is one near system tray.

That's easy. Just do the custom install and select the components you want. The custom install makes sense anyway, e.g., I don't have an email client installed, so the Mail Guard would be senseless. The Ask toolbar and search/homepage stuff is more toward the end. Reject all of this and you're good to go. BTW, it doesn't copy the Ask files into the Avira Desktop directory (at least it's not in mine).

Is that available in the free version or just the paid versions?

Only in the paid versions , I am sure I read somewhere that Avira are trying to get the cloud detection module in their free product sometime in the future. I have no idea when.

2 questions about the latest Antivir free version. When my computer starts, Antivir either conflicts with or blocks the Windows network and sharing center and my wireless connection. This is on Windows 7. My computer will boot, and after about 15 seconds it just stops, the Antivir umbrella still hasn't opened, and the network center/wireless connection has the little circle in the system tray and everything stops for about 20 seconds, almost like Antivir is blocking it to scan or something. Then the umbrella opens, the network connection starts, and the system resumes booting.

    Is this normal behaviour?

Also, about 3 minutes after the system has booted and everything is running fine, Antivir does some kind of system scan. The CPU starts working and it shows a lot of memory usage from avguard.exe.

Normal? Thanks! The system impact is actually lighter on my computer than Avast for some reason which is why I'm using Antivir free edition.

I experience similar behavior but not 15-20 seconds. Just 5-10 sec. I don't have any idea if its because of Avira. Its not a problem to me. I think its windows normal startup behavior regardless of which antivirus it is, it takes some time to recognize the network.

That could be the scheduled weekly quickscan. Try to disable it in the Avira scheduler settings to see if this was the cause.

I too think that the network delay is not related to the antivirus, I saw similar effects on many computers and laptops with different AV products.

If I buy Avira 2013 Premium now (really cheap at Newegg), can I upgrade it for free to a 2014 Avira version, and if so, which one?

yes this was specifically now added to the avira lic's. you would go to the matching product if there was one. if not it would be the most comparable as far as i am told.
