Is the general viewpoint here at Wilder's to install all shields as per the default installer?...maybe worth a poll?

And where does that leave MBAM as an addon layer- maybe just for file shield, or not even that now? [ Post 12 at https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=340260 ].

Avast 8 starting to look toooo complicated....may be OK for long time Avast users. But daunting for me as a possible new user.

What's wrong with the shields? They have a ton right now as well.

There's 8 shields in V7 as well. Except for the new computer health thing it looks pretty much the same except for the GUI.

I see it has a built in program updater, similar to Sumo or Secunia PSI. Very handy feature considering you are most likely to get hit by malware via outdated software

So you guys would be ideally placed to recommend, based on Avast 7, whether to go with the standard install (all shields) or a custom install (only some shields) in Avast 8, right?

I don't want to be without my MBAM.

Not quite like sumo as avast will not have spyware installed with it.:ouch: :gack:

I disabled the IM and P2P shields. Otherwise I only made a few adjustments. They will have to pry my MBAM from my cold dead hands.

I run all shields in most situations. However I have AIS and I don't care for or use their firewall, so I do a custom install and don't install that. Avast is pretty light overall imho. Clearly if there are things like IM and Mail shields etc that you know you won't use, feel free to go ahead and do a custom install.

    -I don't IM or P2P, so, makes sense...thanks .

-excellent! that's indeed good to hear...I'm just being super cautious before jumping onto Avast given their earlier troubles. [my EAM licence has expired] thanks :thumb:

May I now ask which Firewall you are using / or could recommend that runs well with Avast? I have OA now [licence expired, so it's now the free version], but have just taken up the Outpost Pro lifetime licence offer. Do either run well in you're view?

    -many thanks again Trooper

It makes absolutely no difference if you disable IM and P2P Shields as far as performance and memory usage goes. All the logic is still in the program, you just don't see it anymore.

I was questioning the point of removable shields because they just complicate things for no reason and by removing them you can only cripple avast! detection performance but you don't really benefit anything if you remove any of the shields.

looks like it's OK just to go with the default install & keep it simple :thumb:

I've been running Outpost along side Avast for a few years with no problems.

    Excellent choice.

Question on the browser protection (Sandbox of browsers) with Avast. How is it, is it comparable to Sandboxie?

Why shouldn't this discussion be going on? I see no reason for it to be scrapped.

You're late to that discussion. There's absolutely no point in dropping the discussion now since the leaks are long done, but when they first started, folks including myself were very much against discussion of a closed Beta and the posting of leaked information here. Why it wasn't all deleted when it mattered only the mods know, but that was the issue. It makes no difference at this point.
