P.S. Avast, in its infinite wisdom, decided that my ethernet connection was bad and stopped me from connecting. Took awhile to figure out it was Avast, but I knew for sure when I uninstalled it and miracle of miracles, I was able to get back on the world wide web. Not nice, moved to the 6 month AVG Suite for now.

Don't know if this has been fixed since, but awhile back it stopped a relative's PC from getting emails from her ISP, Bigpond, in Australia! I had to move her on to Avira to fix the problem, and it did take me a while to figure that one out. That was the first time I've come across an AV stopping email, although wasn't unheard of before.

Kind of glad to hear I was not alone with the problem, in a weird way. Itt certainly confused me... After some time trying to figure it out (was it hardware failure, etc.o_O) I did fix it, but only by getting rid of Avast. Not inclined at this time to reverse my decision to change over to AVG... even though this offer is only a six month license. It will give me enough time to look around again for the next best anti-virus program. <shrug>

It's funny that Avast will make boot-time scan as "on-demand downloadable" while ads, cleaner, etc. remain, are added or enhanced. I can understand it if they already actually improved other areas of protection making boot-time scanning almost useless.

The cleaner needs internet access? I'm happy that Avast doesn't produce toilets ... :cautious:

Just tried 2 Avast betas. Free is as usually light and no problems. Premier is lite except slow browsers start in Sandbox. Though it must be not a beta problem.

    Cheers!

The other day a friend asked me to uninstall Avast Free Antivirus as it took well over 5 mins after booting to complete it's start up tasks, which made the comp almost unusable whilst doing so. Vista - 1.6Mhz - 2.5M Ram - Fast internet.

I first tried the internal Avast uninstall which never completed even after 45 mins, & froze ! I rebooted & tried again, not much better ! So i went online & found the Officlal Avast uninstaller from their www. Ran it & it said it was unable to complete & needed to be run in Safe Mode, so i did which worked. The thing is, the regular uninstaller should be able to do all that. Why it doesn't ?

Altogether it took well over an hour to uninstall = not good ! Trialing another AV for a month.

The web shield is also very important for protection.

It's just a URL scanner, and not particularly good.
