I was playing with an old laptop yesterday. It worked fine a few months ago. Now it has a lot of zig zag lines on the screen but it does boot into windows. Albeit slowly. The zig zag lines are present on the BIOS screen too. None of the USB ports will boot a flash drive. I tried bootwim but that didn't load either. I can't fix it. I assume it's terminal.

 

@Brian K - I had that exact same thing happen to an old laptop of mine as well. It turned out to be a blown graphics chip in the graphics section of the mainboard. Time to say goodbye ... unless you really love that laptop (mainboard?)

 

Image for Windows 4.05 was released. Here's the changelog.

• Version 4.05 – June 7, 2025
• Install Win7/8 compatible TBINotify on those platforms.
• TBWinPE/RE Builder – Support for installing the Windows 10/11 ADK, Plugin scripting additions and changes (see manual), plus various other enhancements and fixes.
• Other potential changes, updates and enhancements.

This is, once again a very underwhelming update from Terabyte.

I really hope that's not the case, and it's more that Terabyte's focus is too splintered between IFW, IFL, IFD, Partwork, etc. But it is concerning. I mean, Ghost was rock solid once upon a time too but that doesn't mean you should stop meaningfully improving it. It's sad that IFW is getting beat by Reflect and even Hasleo in terms of image creation and restore times, considering that all three use VSS.

 

I don't think they know the meaning of "potential".

Definitions:
Potential: Having or showing the capacity to develop into something in the future.
Potential Changes: Implies a future event or development that has the possibility of occurring.

How many of the winre.wim files do you keep in tbwinre\WinRE_Backup?
I currently have 5.

 

Why do you need more than one? I don't keep any wim files in WinRE_Backup, I omly have the boot. win file in tbwinre\IFW_BootWIM. Thoere's no need to, unless you think you've made an error in building the current wim.

 

The program must make backups. I'll keep the newest one there.

It's a viscous cycle. Good product, people buy it once and keep using it. Revenue drops off, no money for development, no new development, no demand to buy the new version. The curse of good software.

 

If you don't have that folder then how do you restore from OS. You must not, but IFW needs that to boot. But if that's the case why keep any backups, or build the .wim at all?

 

I guess that's the problem. If there was meaningful changelogs people would buy it more. When they update from version 3 to 4, there was really no legitimate reason to upgrade. They need to make users want to buy it.

 

TeraByte issue a "major" upgrade ever 8 years and there is a charge for the new upgrade. There are "minor" upgrades every 3 months or so. You own the software. It's not a subscription model.

 

Right. But for the major versions, it would be nice if they give us a reason to upgrade. But they didn't really do that.

 

What creates that folder?
Whatever creates it, then I guess I haven't run it.

 

If you have backups of the wim then you had to have made them. The TBWinRE is used for auto-rebooting into the RE. I'm pretty sure I remember you saying you use that. Anyways, every time you rerun the TBWinRE builder it puts the current file in that backup directory before it rebuilds it.

 

I have the WinRE_Backup folder, but not the IFW_BootWIM folder.

Either way, I wish the program wouldn't keep creating different versions of winre.wim in the WinRE_Backup folder if it's not necessary.

I usually use TBWinPE, but also make TBWinRE media.

 

It appears that Dark Mode only works if Windows is in Dark Mode.

Dark Mode - Where Is It?

 

Yeah, the way they implemented dark mode was kinda cheapy. Terabyte didn't add skinning ability. They just just Windows' API. From the 4.04 changelog: "Added Dark Mode support (NOTE: because it uses undocumented Windows APIs, it will stop working on a Windows version upgrade)." This is why dark mode doesn't work in RE.

I agree with things you say about it. There are lots of things to hate about it, such as it being splintered amongst numerous applications. For this reason, it has a steep learning curve.

But on a positive note, it's very powerful and very reliable.

 

If you own the TeraByte Bundle you have lots of unique apps. IFW is the main imaging app and I regard it as having a similar place as Macrium Reflect, Hasleo, DS, etc. IFD, IFU, IFL are extras and you don't have to use them if you don't want to. TBOSDT has now been incorporated into IFW but you can use the stand-alone app if you want to.

Partitioning and Boot Management are other modules which aren't essential for imaging. Macrium, etc, don't have these modules and that's fine. I regard the TeraByte Bundle as the most entertaining and useful app that I own.
