Another way to stop it is with Windows Update MiniTool. The last several months Windows 11 has been offered along with the other updates; but with WUMT it doesn't download and I can just hide it.

I assume this is a bork... I was sitting at my desk yesterday and my laptop was sitting idle when the fans throttled up. I checked Task Manager to see what was running and it was the Disk Defragmenter. As this laptop only has SSDs it should only be running a trim operation which does no take as long as this was running. I opened the Defrag program and it recognizes the drives as SSD so I'm not sure why it was trying to defrag them. I disabled disk optimization to make sure it doesn't run again. I assume they messed this up with a recent update, it never did it before. I figure this is fair warning to others, especially if you are running a desktop where the fan speeds are constant, you may not notice it is running.

It is not an error it is by design. Microsoft runs a traditional defrag once a month even on a SSD when the defrag utility is set to run on an automatic schedule. See this link here for details.

It was discovered during this discussion here at Macrium's thread when trying to figure out why some incremental images were huge.

Why Microsoft does this? I have no idea!

Just wanted to add here that I upgraded to Windows 11 24H2 during this February's update and 24H2 has been running flawlessly without a single issue. Either they fixed all the problems with 24H2 or the problems only effected a small subset of users to begin with.

I am running with ExplorerPatcher. It is working fine as well. I just had to uninstall it to let the update proceed as Microsoft has a hard block in place where the update will not happen on a system with EP installed on it. I just reinstalled EP after the update.

Thanks for the info. Odd that I had not noticed it previously.

W11 Home .3476 all is fine according to sfc /scannow. Updating to .3654 and the first i do afterwards is to run sfc, and it says it found damaged files and it is unrepairable?!

    Anyone else?
