If I had a BSOD that would be easy, via WinDbg I could understand some conflicts, some causes that lead to a malfunction and to a BSOD. Unfortunately that is not my case. Since a few months my PC (Windows 10 Home) freezes... better would be to say that the mouse cursor remains blocked in its position. I can say that it does not accept any entry from the keyboard and the mouse is "freezed" (frozen?), but I can see that the clock goes on and that any program in execution is still running.. the only problem is that I can not interact at all and I have to press/release the power button to make a shutdown. If I unplug the mouse and if I insert it again in the USB I can hear the "ding-dong" sound, the same with the keyboard. Nothing happens. Still freezed. The same with an external USB drive This has happened also with the PC just switched on, with no particular program running except my AV (ESET NOD32) and Firewall (COMODO). Does it happen always? No. I kept the PC powered on since last friday until yesterday (thursday) and nothing happened in almost a week. Since yesterday, when it was powered on again, it froze this morning at 7.00, at 10.00, at 12.30 and at 14.15... so 4 times till now Any idea about what should I look to have an idea what is happening? Thanks in advance as usual.
Yes. Since at the end I press the power button, if the shutdown procedure works well nothing shows up as you can see. In the cases when there is some program that prevents the shutdown, and so I cannot move the cursor to click on "Shutdown anyway" (or something similar in English... in Italian is "Arresta comunque") and so I can only press the reset button, then a message saying that Windows was not correctly closed shows in the Reliability Monitor I wouldn't like to pay for a program that maybe cannot help so much...
Personal edition seems to be free to use. I downloaded it at runs without asking for a key or serial number.
As Windows becomes more stable, regular system freezes and blue-screens often point to underlying hardware problems.
@Wallaby Some ideas here. https://www.reddit.com/r/computerhe...d_mouse_constantly_stop_working_on/?rdt=43721
If the memory modules are removable... power down and remove them. Clean the contacts with electronic contact cleaner or a pencil eraser. Reinsert and power on. Might help, can't hurt.
sound weird, but uninstall comodo. can you provide the dumps you used for windbg? its installed here and i may see something else. zip and attach if possible.

Depending on how long ago your OS was installed, it might not be a bad idea to go the "Repair Installation" route. This should help get rid of some of the crud that Windows seems to naturally attract and retain. This is not quite the nuclear option of a full wipe and reinstall, and can be done while retaining apps, settings, and personal data.
Update BIOS/drivers (particularly for chipset). But considering the specific times, AV or firewall might be blocking the driver.
Update. Just freezed again (both keyboard and mouse). This time I unplugged the mouse and plugged it into the USB port in the front panel... the mouse resurrected. Same thing with the keyboard. I checked and saw that 1 USB 3.0 port in the rear panel and 1 USB 3.0 in the front panel seem to bring life to both mouse & keyboard. So it is a HW problem I think. In short: - when the PC is switched on, both mouse & keyboard work well in any USB they are plugged into (3.0 or 2.0) - after a random period of time they stop to respond. If I unplug them from their USB port I can hear the "sound". The same when I plug them again in their USB port. - the only way to bring them to life is to plug them into two USB 3.0 ports (is it just a coincidence?) To add more information, this is a PC "built" in 2011 with Windows 7 and updated to Windows 10 two years ago. One of the two USB 3.0 ports on the front panel stopped working a pair of years ago, but I think it is due to contacts that became defective. What is your advice now, with these new pieces of information? I don't have the tools nor the knowledge to make HW changes/maintenance.
Have you looked at the USB power settings? It may not be the issue here as it's a desktop and not a laptop, but might be worth checking. Check both Power Plan settings and Device Manager, Power Management, "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." https://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-10...-suspend-on-windows-10-and-how-to-disable-it/
Sounds like problems I have had in the past on a PC I built about the same time. Who is the manufacturer of the USB 3 ports in this PC? They were not Intel at that time. I have to use the renesas usb 3.0 extensible host controller driver for mine to work correctly. Windows Update randomly replaces the drivers with Microsoft drivers and they fail to work or work at USB 1.0 speeds. Replacing the mentioned drivers fixes it until the next time it happens.
It was enabled, now I have disabled it. In the Motherboard ASUS P8Z68-V specifications summary I can read: Thanks to all that have posted so far in this thread
Z68 didn't include USB 3.0, same chipset as me. Not familiar with ASMedia but I suggest looking for drivers for it, even if they are old. The Microsoft drivers suck. Edit: Try this and see if you think they will work Download ASMedia USB3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver 1.16.54.1 for Windows 10 64 bit
to clarify - i am not nosy. i focus facts when someone offer dumps. but - freezing means at least no dump in most cases. check the windows "Reliability" tool for red cross and report the full content. for me - i have experienced some USB hardware failures like this, most common caused by too much current (ampere). maybe weather flash impact - and died.
It wasn't an accusation, just a general warning about posting dumps in a public forum. Agreed, you will almost never get a dump from a freeze.
