    @JEAM

I am using Windows 10, but I have gone into my settings, turned it off for "Automatic file downloads".

Speak of the devil, though. This just greeted me when I reactivated from sleep a short time ago. Funny!!!

Microsoft must be monitoring my moves. Obviously, I won't be taking up the offer.

Just checked my other laptop, i.e. Windows 10 Pro, and that setting is [indeed] greyed out.

Wow, speak of the devil indeed! MS really, really, really wants us to sign up for OneDrive.

My guess is that you may have OneDrive still lurking on this machine, but uninstalled on the other one where the "Automatic file downloads" setting was already grayed out.

See if you can uninstall OneDrive completely. According to this Microsoft page, OneDrive can be uninstalled from some versions of Windows but not others. Hopefully yours is one where you can.

Actually, I have OneDrive installed on both laptops. But, I never signed up for a OneDrive, ever.

I am not worried about them being there. But, I might look into that link you reference, and see about uninstalling OneDrive on both laptops, eventually.

BTW, I use Proton Drive and another one, that I signed up to 13 months or so ago, which I won't name, for [my] backups.

I've heard good things about Proton Drive. How happy are you with it? I've been using Norton Online Backup but their new Norton 360 is a disaster and I'm thinking of dropping them at renewal time.

I started with a free Proton Mail account in 2017, and eventually switched to a paid plan. Over the years they added a slew of new products, Proton Drive being one of those. I liked their initiative, and so have embraced their 'philosophy of progress'. I suggest you give them a try. You may be surprised.

    HitmanPro v3.8.42 build 338 BETA

    Changelog

    • FIXED: Closing browsers on ARM64 before a cookie scan.
    • IMPROVED: Running browsers & 3rd party tracking cookie cleaning (browsers can/will now be closed, or cookies won't be scanned).
    • IMPROVED: Suspicious detection's on Windows 11 causing False-Positives on Microsoft binaries after Windows Updates should no longer occur.
    • CHANGED: When auto-upload is disabled the results pane will now stay open so that pending uploads can be evaluated and submitted/ignored.
    Download
    32-bit https://dl.surfright.nl/HitmanProBeta.exe
    64-bit https://dl.surfright.nl/HitmanProBeta_x64.exe

In previous builds prompting for running browsers only occurred when access to the cookie stores was blocked, this caused some inconsistent behavior over different Windows versions.
From now on it will either scan for cookies when all supported browser processes are terminated, or the cookie scan will be skipped if the user chooses not to close the running browser(s).

Fresh Windows updates installed I assume? can you run a few compare scan's with 332 stable vs 338 and see if it's consistent over both versions?

Scan performance depends on a couple of things, not only local CPU power, including how many files need inspection, and cloud service performance, internet round-trip against our servers etc so some fluctuation is always possible.
If you have a look at older scan logs (before a windows update for instance) it might be faster but also have targeted less files/objects & remnants

    It has updated automatically.

However, it is stuck on one particular folder. Is there a way to exempt a folder from the scan?

It's multi-threaded so you can't pin this to this specific file, it might be there are other things in the background at play here.
I would suggest to keep it open for a while see if in the end it finishes, looks like there are a good bunch of new files that need inspection as it's still classifying, how much new data is on that Proton drive? (e.g. recent backup or something).

Still going nowhere fast! These files are in the Proton Drive cloud. How can they be read, anyway by HMP? They are encrypted!!!!

Compared to the earlier scan with the beta version, but with the release version, today, I changed it to scan in "Compatible Disk Mode". This seems to be not the right mode to have chosen.

Even cancelling is proving to be troublesome.

If you have that drive mounted/readable by Windows then HMP (or any other program for that mater) can access the data.

That can huge impact on scan performance, the more security products that also want to read in on the data scanned the slower it gets, if no issues please stay on Direct Disk Mode.

So what you can do is compare scan performance between both disk modes, and scan without the Proton drive signed in/mounted.

I did this, it scanned a lot better/shorter this time, and I saved the scan log, which was subsequently uploaded to Proton Drive when restarted.

Is HitmanPro.exe /excludelist= still valid? The reason I ask is that I have entries in there that are still being flagged by HMP. Also, I'm still annoyed by the host file being flagged for not allowing Avast Data Collection for apps such as CCleaner. You really need to fix this or allow the host file in the exclude list.
