Bots and spam have been the majority of internet traffic since the beginning. It's always gonna be that way.
I honestly didn't know about this, and it's also not clear what the object of these malicious bots are. I do know that it's very annoying when you have to solve CAPTCHA puzzles. There should be better ways to identify bots.

Anything they can get into. They hammer our web server constantly. Forget opening any other ports. We had an online SQL Server and RDP server when I started here. There were hundreds of open connections to each trying to log in. I had to take them offline.
But what is their object? Is it only to perform DDOS attacks, and you should pay them in order for them to stop? I noticed that quite a few online shops nowadays use CAPTCHA in order for me to proove that I'm not a bot, so I guess this problem has indeed become worse.
I guess I should read more about this topic. I assumed they needed malware (on server or endpoint) in order for them to do this.
Nope. A port scan would be the starting point. If they find any open they try to connect and look for exploits. Or weak passwords.
Maybe post a screenshot? Everything from Facebook is blocked on my PC. https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=418609
