Brave's own ad- and tracker blocking uses many filters that uBO also uses. So there is a huge overlap.
    An extended overview:
    https://github.com/brave/adblock-resources/blob/master/filter_lists/list_catalog.json

If you want the extra features that uBO offers (logging, easy whitelisting, cosmetic tools, dynamic filtering) and 'playing' with settings and filterlists, I should only choose uBO.
For a set and forget solution, I should only choose Brave's own ad- and tracker blocking.

Brave's ad- and tracker blocking has tweaking possibilities. You can add filterlists and even custom rules. View:
    https://gitlab.com/CHEF-KOCH/brave-browser-hardening#optional-filter-lists-you-could-add
To stay on topic, let's leave that item further undisputed, just as the question if Brave itself is a good choice.

I may have missed this, but I updated uBlock to 154.0 and all my custom filter lists disappeared. Is this a known problem? I had to do a firefox profile restore. Back on 153.0 now.

I re-did the 154.0 update from Firefox Tools (Addons and Themes) drop-down and after restarting, the custom filters were gone again. Never had this before. Anyone else?

If you haven't updated to uBlock 154.0 on Firefox, it may be wise to backup your uBlock settings before doing so.

I just use the main page (see link) to read about news or movie reviews. But you should be able to see the video when you disable uBlock, see screenshot, so I'm not sure what's going on. I did try to allow a couple of scripts, but it simply doesn't work. So perhaps they have applied some anti-ad blocking technique.

    https://www.gids.tv

Perhaps this is because of geo blocking, because like I said, when I disable uBlock I get to see all videos. The problem is that they also serve you annoying animated ads, I don't know why they refuse to switch to (non tracking) static ads. Then I would consider disabling my adblocker. Seriously, they are such idiots.

BTW, I've read a bit more about uBlock Lite (see link) and from what I understood, Gorhill should be able to bring back the element blocker, so it's technically possible. And I also wonder why he doesn't bring back the matrix, because how am I supposed to unblock stuff when I run into problems? Or is this related to dynamic filtering?

That seems like a possible and even likely reason, then as to why the videos won't play for me.

I see no reason for uBO with Brave. I've always found Brave smooth and trouble-free using only built-in features once it's set up to your liking. If you want more security with some loss of usability then disable javascript globally with selective whitelisting, but going to this extreme is otherwise unnecessary.

They also don't play for me here and I'm in the Netherlands.
This is in clean profiles of Firefox an Chromium with only uBO.
uBO on or of makes no difference.

    Instead this is displayed (translated):
    Clicking on `here` did nothing...
I allowed all cookies in the browser settings.

    What an awful site.
    They won't see me again.

Oh okay, then so much for the geo-location block theory.

    Thanks for posting.

I looked for more details, and I read this discussion:
    https://github.com/uBlockOrigin/uBlock-issues/discussions/3022
    and gorhill's reply:
    https://github.com/uBlockOrigin/uBlock-issues/discussions/3022#discussioncomment-7864712

In addition, I read this, about the costs of 'purge all caches' + 'update now':
    https://github.com/uBlockOrigin/uBlock-issues/discussions/2958

I was used to purging caches and updating lists beginning of the day, but I stopped doing that. I'll only check if 'Update now' is available.

It's indeed annoying, but it's probably because they have implemented a very aggressive anti-adblocker tech. But perhaps it's blocked by the built-in blocker from Firefox?

Well, not completely because nicolaasjan may have other problems on his system. :p

Well, you can easily test that by clicking the shield symbol at the left side of the URL bar and deactivating the built-in tracking protection.

I disabled that, allowed all cookies just like nicolaasjan, and disabled uBO for the site, and videos still don't play.

Did the same here and, as as I said in my previous post, it didn't work in a clean Chromium profile either.

Finally got it working after also disabling my DNS blocking (hosts file).
Got 2 ads before the video played...

This is in "uBlock filters – Unbreak" (added in 2020"):
(don't know if it's relevant any more)

content of iframe is not important, its not shown (display: none)
it is triggered from a script.

if you click the link below
    so the video is gone.

But it played in the clean test profile with my hosts file turned off.

sorry, no video here for "vrachtwagen", even not in a new profile nor safe mode of firefox.
ah, i see, the link is wrong.
    Code:
    https://www.kijk.nl/video/UsllpkjdsahXjl&autoplay=1&token=RW5DN0tZSGpFY0FwaHFyanhoR2trZz09
    do not work, but
    Code:
    https://www.kijk.nl/video/UsllpkjdsahXjl
    and skips to
    Code:
    https://www.kijk.nl/programmas/hart-van-nederland-late-editie/UsllpkjdsahXjl
    oh, pity
my conclusion would be that kijk is protecting its videos against such external access, and foreigners have no luck.

to note: uBo lite need to set on stage 3 (optimal) of 4 (full) to let kijk working, otherwise a blocking notice is shown. "consent-o-matix" is handling the consent dialog.

Yeah this foreigner had no luck--not a single video would open on that page but as consolation prize, I was offered alternatives. :)
Oh well. Seems quite stubbornly in place to where no kind of third party can breach it. At least not now.

Yes I know, but Firefox also has anti-fingerprinting features, I thought perhaps these were always enabled. But anyway, did you read the article that I posted? I was happy to read that Gorhill should be able to add the element picker to uBlock Lite. But I now also realize that the matrix, which gives full control over scripts, is related to Dynamic Filtering, so this is a huge problem.

OK, so you used some kind of tool that makes use of the hostfile to protect against tracking? I knew it had to be something on your side. :p

    @Rasheed187,
Firefox anti-fingerprinting features are part of Enhanced Tracking Protection. If you deactivate Enhanced Tracking Protection for a specific website, that includes deactivating the anti-fingerprinting features.

Yes thanks for reminding me, I'll have to look around for something to cover the fingerprinting maybe. As you helped me out w/those CBS news sites, that's the price one pays for enabling embedded media. :cautious: So far, nothing untoward, though.
