VLC is my backup media player, so I do not update it regularly. Since the last Windows update of VLC was 3.0.18 (Nov 2022), a long time ago, so I thought I should update it.

I had read here that 3.0.19 had been released, but it was not available on the official page. It is included on the change log linked in the previous post, so I thought it very odd.

It turns out that 3.0.19 is just a special version of VLC with RTX Video Super Resolution support, and only meant for customers who have nVidia RTX 30 and 40 series GPUs.

As of today, October 2, 2023, the latest version of VLC for Windows is still 3.0.18. I thought I should post this just in case someone else is wondering where 3.0.19 is.

 

Same over here, I still prefer Media Player Classic, but VLC is also pretty good, it plays most video files without problems, without having to install some codec pack. But do you know how to configure it to make it pause when you click on the screen? It's these little things that get on my nerves.

 

I've recently installed VLC on macOS, QuickTime is still my default. VLC has been my default on Ubuntu for a while now.

 

VLC was my default media player from around 2002 to 2018. So I am actually a VLC fan. Unfortunately it could not keep up in the video picture quality department and lost out to MPV. Ironically it happened around the same time the VLC team started working on version 4 of VLC. I think they kept the new enhancements for version 4 only, and did not add anything new to version 3 after that time. Version 4 is apparently still in development since then, so VLC lagged far behind in quality when compared to other media players.

I also have MPC-BE with MadVR rendering engine as my backup player. Both MPC-BE and MPV (SMPlayer GUI) offer similar video picture quality, which sadly far outstrips the quality offered by VLC version 3 on Windows.

VLC does not have a built in option for that but you can try this open source plugin. The instructions on using the plugin are on the main page.

Thanks -- I too had been wondering about that. I'm also surprised not to have found any mention of recent WebP and WebM security patches (in FFmpeg) on the VLC forums or bug report pages.

 

I was very surprised to see how much better MPC-BE rendered videos, compared to VLC, on my low-end laptop with Intel 520 built-in graphics. At present I only keep VLC for playing music because it has very useful built-in audio equalizers and presets. If MPC-BE adds a good equalizer (or if there's a free one I can add), I'd probably drop VLC entirely.

 

It shows up to date when I do a check for updated on my laptop with nvidia 3070 gpu, it's on 3.0.18 & not offering 3.0.19.

 

I guess VLC users who frequent these forums have gotten used to VLC devlopers lack of enthusiasm in developing and updating VLC.

I know it is a free software and one should not expect frequent regular updates, but I remember a time just a few years ago when there used to be a new version of VLC every couple of months, with new features and security fixes. Now they have not released any official version since Nov 2022.

Also, VLC version 4 was announced and first nightly released at the start of 2019. It has been over four years since then and V4 is still in beta! Again I understand it is a free software, but come on, it is just a media player, and there is no way it should take four years to develop it.

 

I guess the developers are not 100% confident in VLC 3.0.19, so they have not released it for general public. It is probably just meant for advanced users who most likely have the skills to fix any issues that might come up during its use. This is why you have to seek it out, and it is not offered as an update.

 

The changelog for 3.0.19 does containt a lot of general changes and not just RTX Video Super Resolution support though. But I guess indeed don't have confidence enough to release it to the general public, and are too busy working on 4.0. I do hope they will soon release an update (even if RC) for the recent vulnerabilities.

This is weird.
I saw 3.0.19 available on Majorgeeks, so I went to www.videolan.org, but there I still got 3.0.18 offered...

Majorgeeks did offer 3.0.19 however.

Looking at the date from the Videolan link, it was just released yesterday. It usually takes a while with new VLC releases before they are also offered on the main site.

They updated the changelog since I last posted it, they added the VP8/libvpx zero-day
