How much longer will my W10 be relevant before it cannot be updated any more??

I'm figuring once that happens it's time to get a new computer. I'd be surprised if my $500 Dell Inspiron can take 11.

You've got until October 14th of 2025. Your current system can almost certainly run Windows 11 and it will probably run faster than Windows 10. Microsoft let you use a workaround to install it on unsupported hardware. You can use the following to do it for you. But it's fine to wait to upgrade, due to their being nearly three years of Windows Updates.

some w10 editions will last until 2027/2028 - 10 years support. but those are neither nor recommended because its features are not that rich and good as a current build. if you dare, or like, to use w11: just do it!

I just got a new laptop in May [which I considered a bargain at the time, cost wise], with Windows 10 Pro. I will let it run on until updates for it stop.

I will update to Windows 11, or get a new laptop, if it fails before that time.

    Hi guys.

Who has upgraded Windows 10 to Windows 11 on unsupported hardware?
Are there any problems such as updates etc?
From what I can tell, Rufus seems to be the simplest method.

I upgraded from W7P64 to W11P with Rufus on a 9 yr old ThinkPad. Runs perfect, better than 7. Trying to forget about the W11 telemetry though. It's tough for me.

    Thanks zapjb.

I guess that third option automatically creates a local account with the desired username if you were performing a clean installation.

I misspoke. I fresh installed W11P over W7P64 wiping the whole disk. Is that dialog box from Rufus because I don't recognize it.

You get regular Windows Updates, but the yearly feature updates to new builds of Windows 11, have to be download and installed manually.

    hi @zapjb
can I ask you with your 9year old thinkpad is compatible with w11?
and in case it 's not compatible , how can you update it?
    thanks

Microsoft let you install Windows 11 on unsupported hardware. As a result, you can install it on any computer than can run Windows 10. I even installed it on a 16 year old Core 2 Duo laptop with 2GB of RAM. The easiest way to do a clean install of Windows 11 on unsupported hardware is to create a bootable flash drive using Rufus. If you want to upgrade, rather than starting from fresh, you can use AveYo's Media Creation Tool batch file.

    hi @roger_m
run the bat and select autoupdate?
is the bat with autoupdate the best option?
    thanks

That's the normal Rufus options popup window you get when you make Windows 11 bootable UFDs.

That's the type of answer I was looking for, Roger.
It sounds like you know all about it.

I'm currently upgrading Windows 10 to Windows 11 using a Rufus created Windows 11 UFD.
So, it appears you can do both a clean installation and an upgrade.

Mind you, it hasn't completed yet.
But I even let it look for updates and it still progressed.

How can I check to see if I have the Yearly Feature Updates? And where can I download them, & is it a M$ site? Thanks.

Open the Start Menu, enter winver and click on it in the search results. You should be running version 22H2. You can download new versions when they are released, with Microsoft's Media Creation Tool.

There should just be the option to apply the needed registry changes. You can download Windows 11 using Microsoft's Media Creation Tool.

current state of final windows 11 builds
    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-health/windows11-release-information

windows 11 supported lenovo devices, we had that in this forum before
    https://support.lenovo.com/de/en/solutions/ht512623-lenovo-devices-supported-for-windows-11

if not listed means not suitable for win11. it depends not on age. but if a device can run win10 then it mostly can run win11 too, but need tricks to install or upgrade.

and as written annual update packages need manual work, "inplace update", next will be 23H2 around october.
