What happened to Wilders Security?

I realize i have to be clearer about one thing in my former post. The likings, they should be as it is at Malwaretips, they get added at the bottom of a post and accumulates over time dependent on how many that is adding some respons, a liking. That adding can be done days, weeks and months after the post. One do not have to make a post, as here, just to add a respons to a post. So therefore, as mentioned in this thread, a thread do not have to be "spammed" with a lot of thanks etc, but can instead develop according to the initial purpose. Stay on track. This, and what i wrote before, is the reason why it is important with the use of symbols, and a symbol can say more then several meanings.

 

Hopefully somebody will still be around to read and respond to this...

I've been thinking about the issue of decreased traffic on Wilders Security, and two possible factors popped into my head;

1. Windows security software has matured to the point where (useful) innovations are few and far-between;
2. The Windows-using public believes (maybe for good reason) that most serious malware nowadays is targeted at large organizations (companies, governments, etc.), and so the security of one's own PC is no longer top-of-mind.

A factor related to either or both of the above could also be that Windows security has reached the point of being good enough that fewer users are worrying about it, explaining the decreased amount of traffic here.

Thoughts?

 

That's not the case, as MalwareTips is very active.

What happened to Wilders Security?

Do you think the drift away from Security to IT to "just about anything goes" plays a part.
Because I really don't care that "Netflix has quietly made a change to its pricing model".
That's just one example from many available of how wide we now cast the posting net.

 

I don't think that's an issue, considering the MalwareTips is very active.

 

The problem I think is, as many members already said here, that most part of pc users it's not interested to security, and the problems of the security are not an hobby and a passion for them. So over the years we saw many great security softwares be discontinued, because they hadn't market. The common users are not able - and they don't even want - to evaluate a security software. They buy Windows and they want believe that it is definitely safe, that Windows Defender is all they need and that they have not to worry for the security of their pc.
In this scenery which space can have security softwares ? Many of us here remember how the developer of System Safety Monitor had to discontinue the program because he couldn't to continue his development. And after SSM the same thing happened to many other programs........

Another aspect of the problem is that once every day appeared many new program and application, not only dedicated to security; the Web was always rich of new, different, interesting softwares to try and to discuss, today the novelties are very rare.

 

MalwareTips for me is way to jammed up all the time. In a matter of minutes i lose interest but Wilders Security Forum is more streamlined and open to easily get a solid fix on a topic or using SEARCH for some subject matter. But that's just me.

I agree. But I think that it's not so much a problem of competition, as much a certain lack of topics to discuss; and it's due to the Web and what it offers in these days.

To me now, Wilders Security has become a clone of Major Geeks.com software update, that's the only active sub-forum just listing new software releases which I'd rather just go to Software update sites to get, almost 0 discussion about security programs, and user experiences. It has nothing to do with the decline of the need for a security program as other forums as doing just fine. Despite what the mods have said here, it is the restriction of comparing solution A vs B is the major issue (at least for me).

 

So, a sincere question, not trying to troll anyone: what keeps you here?

There's been a lot of discussion about how the forum is lacking, yet people obviously continue to read and post (even if it's just posting in this thread). Personally, I find A vs B discussions uninteresting, as I played that game for years and have long since tired of it -- sure, I try to keep up on what's new, but mostly I'm comfortable with my security choices and spend my time elsewhere. What I like about Wilders is the headline summaries; yes, you can get these elsewhere, but here's a community I know, and I've come to identify and respect many of the posters; so, for me, it's comfortable and easily digestible. (Plus, it's lower resource hungry than most websites, so it's much easier to browse on my 7+ year-old tablet! )

 

I might be wrong, but I think back in the day (many years ago) Wilders had a reward system as shown by a cookie rating. FanJ ?

 

Hopefully without sounding corny: "A soft spot in my heart".

 

Education never stops.

 

And let's the not forget the anticipation of some new program/product testing the Wilder's Forums waters.

 

I like being around people who know more about a topic than I do.

What keeps me here, every thing you said applies. Wilders Security is a very good resource for information.

 

Familiarity I guess, has just become a day-to-day go-to. More so than MT.
Still a welcome resource, especially where devs are present. Pity about those who for one reason or another are no longer around.

 

Same reasons that you mentioned, and MalwareTips is way too cluttered.

I also doubt that A vs B discussions would make WSF more lively, but why not give it a try, if so many people believe it would? I just wish people on this forum would respond a bit more to certain topics related to IT security, even if it's not related to home user PC security. But this simply isn't their point of interest.

I have seen this being mentioned a couple of times now, can you perhaps post a link (perhaps via PM) to the section on MT that is very active? I couldn't find it.

 

Probably not in a good way. Just a back and forth of "this product sucks" or "this one is the best". If I post something good or bad about a product I try to give a reason for it.
Also, I'll dare to speculate that you don't see a lot of responses on some of the IT security issues because those most skilled are probably busy dealing with those situations and those that haven't gained that experience have nothing to say?
