Recently tried updating the Dell laptop BIOS from Dell dl page, win11:

In in win11 followed the instructions, install was completed successfully, and the rebooted to the BIOS, older version present.

    checked BitLocker: upload_2023-5-22_6-46-41.png

This seems to be heading for 'BOOT Disk' software to install

    1. Macrium boot can i navigate to Windows ''dl' folder & install bios?

Is there an option to update the bios from within the bios? Put it on a flash drive and do that if you can.

Was the laptop plugged into the power when you rebooted? There are some cases where the laptop has to be plugged in for the BIOS update to run. I discovered this a week or two ago. I can't remember if it was a Dell or other brand of laptop though. For updating Dells, I recommend using Dell Update for consumer models, or Dell Command Update for business models such as Latitude or Precision. They check for BIOS, firmware and driver updates.

    Hi Guys,

@roger_m Using "Dell Command Update" which uses Dell support-assist, to find obsolete drivers & update, the scan finds 0 updateable drivers, whereas "Find Drivers Manually" finds many critical driver updates.

Also found was Dell forum many BIOS versions, including this Deii 8930 once bitten cannot update to the current version. In my case firmware 1.1.23 when installing 1.1.28 install Success. Check version at BIOS <after reboot>

shows. ver1.1.23. DCU- finds 0, manual scan, many.

Also 3rd party Driver Installers, see out-of-date drivers say 'success" but fail to install. <I'ts like similar to, installing virtually, there then gone after reboot

Related to previous "memory integrity" @Hardware.

One trusted solution was to run & .exe file, which gives, allows dos changes from windows, I'll find it . The file allows bypass of Windows OS, while in Windows, to update bios.

It says to dl the file, but no link

It seems that your computer requires Dell Update rather than Dell Command Update. Alternatively, if you have SupportAssist (which is a separate app) installed, it will do the same job.

@roger_m both methods fail to install new version. 2 dell pc's same problem. Cannot update bios!

the laptop can be updated prior to windows loading F12 bios firmware update. That environment is not, explanatory enough to proceed. <pics soon>

the other desktop pc, lacks the F12 bios update routine.

The known accepted work around from Dell forum, is update bios before windows loads.

One more thing to try, is to look at optional updates in Windows Update. In Windows 11, if you go Windows Update in settings, it's under Advanced Options. Have a look at driver updates if there are any, as there may be a BIOS update. BIOS updates are labelled as firmware updates in Windows Update. You can ignore any other driver updates.

From what I find driver updates don't seem to be optional in Windows 11. 10 works just like you described but 11 seems to force the updates. I actually had to set up a group policy to stop them from force downgrading my Intel graphics driver because they seemed to think a 2 year old driver from Windows Update was better than the latest from Intel.

Put the file on a flash drive or in a shorter path.
Of the options in your second screenshot I'd assume you would want to look in the System Volume. Nothing with a $ in front of it.

I upgraded the BIOS on my 2015 HP Zbook G2 to the latest version. HP couldn't include a TPM 2.0 firmware update in the package.

Some drivers are only available as optional updates in both Windows 10 and 11, as they have the potential to cause issues. This not only includes updated versions of drivers you already have installed, but can include drivers devices which have no driver installed. When I do a clean install of Windows on a computer where the manufacturer does not provide a tool or recovery media that will automatically install all the needed drivers, I look at the optional updates and install the drivers for devices that have no driver, or only a generic Microsoft driver installed. In the more recent builds of Windows 10, there are some drivers that previously would have been available as regular Windows Updates, that are now only available as optional updates. In my experience, I find the optional drivers to be stable and work fine, but I only install them if a device is missing a driver, has a generic driver installed, or has issues which could potentially be fixed with an updated driver.

Back on topic, I find that BIOS updates are often available as optional updates. Recently I found an optional BIOS update on a computer that already had the latest BIOS the manufacturer provided on their support page installed. I installed the update and it worked fine.

I believe that laptop only has TPM 1.2 and my understanding is that you can't upgrade from TPM 1.2 to 2.0. If you want TPM 2.0 to install Windows 11, Microsoft lets you install it on unsupported hardware, so you don't have to have it.

Both sources: M$ & Mfg install the same results after installation, not updated. Previously both machines were capable of successfully updating bios, but not now.

So the gospel "BIOS" software, from Dell tag# IMO.

Mfg. says reported known issue for some.

    <work arounds>

    1. wait for the new ver.

    2. Install before the handoff to the Windows OS.

    Am I missing something?

This might be your best option at this point. Unless this update addresses an issue you are having it might not be worth trying to force the issue. I've bricked motherboards before updating the BIOS. Fortunately in those cases the chip was replaceable.

Yes, I would not force the issue. If it's not relatively obstacle-free to install it, I would take the hint and abandon the effort for now.

There's a BIOS update for my board but it doesn't show in my BIOS as being available. Can one download it on USB and install it that way? I suppose but I smell a little more risk than would be ordinarily present. The changelog for it is hardly urgent, just vague statements about "system stability." Typical ASUS. Although I'm fanatic about updating anything, in this case: If it ain't broke don't fix it.

I hope no kind of firmware updates come thru Windows! Shouldn't stuff like that *always* be done in the BIOS itself? That does sound encouraging, though, that perhaps another revision of that Dell one could come out at some later time. It's a compromise betw. endlessly trying and giving up altogether.

Yes I agree! In the case of the laptop it has this problem.

see : Problem after update | Wilders Security Forums

That same problem occurred on my Dell desktop 8930, & was fixed after re-boot from visiting it's BIOS

Windows security center > device security > memory integration. Now fixed Dell8930, trying to update from Dell. Say's 'file version fail'
I believe the memory integrity issue warrants BIOS update, or some other resolution.

They sure do. At least for Dell/Alienware. I have received 2 updates from Windows Update. They were not optional either. It just pushed them to me and prompted for a restart. Probably less likely for a home built machine but for an OEM machine it does happen.

Wow! OK. Well thank you for the info--yes if you have an OEM, I guess you're at the mercy of that then. Now it's clear why this was so persistent. :cautious:

It is. The BIOS gets updated when you restart, just like when you use download and install BIOS updates from the manufacturer's website.
