A mole on Reid's face was one of the differences that ultimately forced police to release him, Calogero said. Calogero also "estimated a 40-pound difference between Reid and the purse thief he saw in surveillance footage," the Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate report said. The culprit, unlike Reid, had "flabby arms."

"Police could have checked his height and weight or made an effort to speak to him or asked to walk through his house to look for evidence. He would have complied," Calogero told the newspaper.

It's not clear exactly what facial recognition was used in this case. In previous cases, Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto's office requested facial recognition analyses through the Louisiana State Analytic and Fusion Exchange in Baton Rouge, which uses Clearview AI and MorphoTrak systems, the report said.

Clearview software compares faces to pictures on social media and many other sources.

"Our platform, powered by facial recognition technology, includes the largest known database of 30+ billion facial images sourced from public-only web sources, including news media, mugshot websites, public social media, and other open sources," the company's website says.

You go to the checkout and you're not asked for any documents to prove your age. Instead, there's a camera, accompanied by clever software, that estimates your age.

In reality, this system has recently been tested at various famous supermarkets in the UK. The likes of Asda and Tesco have been trialing a system created by a company called Yoti.
This company, quite naturally, enjoys the motto: "Digital Identity as a Force For Good." Because what else could it be?

Yoti insists the beauty of it is that you don't need to hand over any personal information. The company adds that any images are immediately pulped.
So you're trying to hurry up, yet have to find an app on your phone, open it, and scan? Is that really quicker than showing your ID to a human?

Apparently, all these supermarkets would now love to be permanently Yotified. This would require the government to change its laws. Moreover, Yoti declares: "The majority of shoppers who used Yoti digital proof of age solutions liked the technology and would use it again, once available."

After Iranian lawmakers suggested last year that face recognition should be used to police hijab law, the head of an Iranian government agency that enforces morality law said in a September interview that the technology would be used “to identify inappropriate and unusual movements,” including “failure to observe hijab laws.” Individuals could be identified by checking faces against a national identity database to levy fines and make arrests, he said.

Although there are other ways women could have been identified, Shajarizadeh and others fear that the pattern indicates face recognition is already in use—perhaps the first known instance of a government using face recognition to impose dress law on women based on religious belief.

Face recognition has become a desirable tool for authoritarian regimes around the world as a way to suppress dissent, Grothe says, although many lack the necessary technical infrastructure. “Iran is a case where they have both the governmental will and the physical capability,” she says.

Some face recognition in use in Iran today comes from Chinese camera and artificial intelligence company Tiandy. Its dealings in Iran were featured in a December 2021 report from IPVM, a company that tracks the surveillance and security industry.

NY AG wants answers on Madison Square Garden's use of facial recognition against legal opponents

New York Attorney General Letitia James has sent a letter to MSG Entertainment, the owner and operator of Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall, asking for information about its use of facial recognition to deny entry to attorneys at firms representing its legal opponents. James’s letter warns that the Orwellian policy may violate local, state and federal human rights laws, including those prohibiting retaliation.

MSG Entertainment’s facial recognition has been identifying and denying entry to lawyers from firms representing clients suing the company — whether or not those attorneys are directly involved in the cases. The company, led by CEO James Dolan (who also owns the New York Knicks and Rangers), has defended the policy, framing it as an attempt to prevent evidence collection “outside proper litigation discovery channels.”

However, lawyers have called that rationale “ludicrous,” criticizing the ban as a “transparent effort” to punish attorneys for suing them.
When passing through a metal detector, the arena’s facial recognition matched the attorneys with photos from their firms’ websites.

In the letter, James warns MSG Entertainment that blocking people from venues may violate New York’s civil and human rights laws while causing other attorneys to think twice about taking on legitimate cases against the company. “MSG Entertainment cannot fight their legal battles in their own arenas,” said AG James.

Manipulating Weights in Face-Recognition AI Systems

Interesting research: “Facial Misrecognition Systems: Simple Weight Manipulations Force DNNs to Err Only on Specific Persons“:

For example, we show how such a backdoored system can take any two images of a particular person and decide that they represent different persons (an anonymity attack), or take any two images of a particular pair of persons and decide that they represent the same person (a confusion attack), with almost no effect on the correctness of its decisions for other persons. Uniquely, we show that multiple backdoors can be independently installed by multiple attackers who may not be aware of each other’s existence with almost no interference.

We have experimentally verified the attacks on a FaceNet-based facial recognition system, which achieves SOTA accuracy on the standard LFW dataset of 99.35%. When we tried to individually anonymize ten celebrities, the network failed to recognize two of their images as being the same person in 96.97% to 98.29% of the time. When we tried to confuse between the extremely different looking Morgan Freeman and Scarlett Johansson, for example, their images were declared to be the same person in 91.51% of the time.

It’s a weird attack. On the one hand, the attacker has access to the internals of the facial recognition system. On the other hand, this is a novel attack in that it manipulates internal weights to achieve a specific outcome. Given that we have no idea how those weights work, it’s an important result.

The U.K. Information Commissioner's Office in a Tuesday letter to the North Ayrshire Council said facial recognition in schools isn't necessarily incompatible with the U.K. General Data Protection Regulation. Where the council fell short was in obtaining parents' and pupils' consent for the system, which local authorities did not present as being a choice.

The U.K. GDPR - which is the same as the European Union's GDPR and which the British government incorporated into national law before exiting the union - requires public authorities to obtain consent for the use of facial recognition, the U.K. office wrote.

The school system, consisting of nine secondary schools and about 3,000 students, did seek written consent from pupils and children when it rolled out in 2021 a payment system for school lunches based on facial recognition.
An email sent from the school system stated that "facial recognition will be used for authenticating all secondary school pupils that require access to school meals and/or snacks, including those eligible for free school meals."

Privacy rights campaigners raised concerns, garnering the west central Lowlands council international attention. An executive with the company that installed the cameras told the Financial Times that a facial recognition-based payment system significantly sped up the lunch line.

Making matters worse, ID.me’s CEO initially told the public it did not use “more complex and problematic” facial recognition, only to reverse course days later and acknowledge it uses the technology to check users against an internal database in order to detect fraud. The technology, known as 1:many facial recognition, matches images against those in a database and is generally less accurate than 1:1 matching, which compares a user’s face against only their own photo.
