Bing surges up App Store charts thanks to OpenAI

After only announcing yesterday that Microsoft will be adding technology from OpenAI to new versions of its Bing search engine and Edge browser, apps for both of these products have surged up the App Store and Play Store charts. News that the OpenAI powered Bing could be tried out immediately broke yesterday, which appears to have contributed to a surge of users downloading the Bing app for their smartphone of choice.

Bing is currently sat at the number 10 spot in the UK App Store chart, with Edge sitting at 46 as it stands. Given where it was previously however, it shows a huge increase in downloads overnight, and the same can be said for the US as well.

This surge in downloads may result in some threat to Google in the future, but it just depends if people keep the app installed and keep using it, as the charts can change rapidly from day to day. Google is actually below Bing in the charts at time of writing, which would have been unthinkable just before.

On Tuesday, Microsoft held a press event at its Redmond, Washington headquarters to officially announce the new Bing search engine and the new Edge browser. The press event went over the details about the chatbot AI features that are being added to both Bing and Edge. That includes adding a new search box that holds up to 1,000 characters for more detailed questions and inquiries. The chatbot, developed by ChatGPT creators OpenAI, can help Bing users plan a trip, find recipe ingredients and more.

The Edge browser will also be able to help users summerize a press release posted on a web page and much more. Microsoft calls the chatbot a "copilot" for internet searchers.

It's a known fact that every few months, Google changes its search algorithm to show more accurate and well written content in its results (at least in theory). These changes can either improve or degrade a web site's ranking in search, resulting in traffic boosts on the one end, or big traffic declines if the algorithm does not go in the website's favor.

Some people might believe that AI-generated content must be of lower quality than content made by a human, but this might not be the case.

I still feel I'm missing something despite all of the discussion on it. I go to the Bing page and search on it... I'm not really noticing anything different except the larger search box. That said I haven't had a lot of time to look into it.

On Tuesday, Microsoft announced the new Bing, which incorporates a ChatGPT model into Search. They were quite coy about what OpenAI model undergirded the new system. All they were willing to disclose at this point was that it is more advanced than GPT-3.5 that’s currently being used in ChatGPT. Could this signal the launch of GPT-4? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

One of the biggest differences between Bing’s new Search and ChatGPT is that it’s vastly more aware of the current state of the web. The user interface works in a very similar fashion. Basically, it’s a chat box that runs alongside your search results, but can be easily accessed. However, unlike ChatGPT you can ask it about current events and get fairly accurate results.

To summarize, the new Bing Search has two components. One is the OpenAI-driven model that provides foundational knowledge in a communicative way using natural language. However, at the moment it’s only current up until 2021. Alternatively, the second component is the traditional Bing Search. This means that users can decide how they browse the internet and what type of experience they prefer. With easy side-by-side access to both provided in the user interface.

I think it can answer questions but I'm not sure if it can do corporate strategy. Business owners can probably see for themselves and test it against strategies of CEOs they hire.

I don't think that any serious engineer is threantened by current GPT AI. It is just a language model. It doesn't understand underlying engineering concepts. It just spills out text that sounds like it makes sense. Often wrong, sometimes correct by chance. Just like this article.

I'm personally getting a bit tired hearing about this stuff. But I do think eventually it might become a risk to certain jobs. Or perhaps it will cause people to work more efficiently, who knows?

I'm not scared about ChatGPT, it is just a chatbot/language model. The thing that scares me is that corporations try to use it everywhere and for every purpose just to ride the hype wave and not because it is the right tool for the job.
