I don't see any issues when this feature is enabled. But like I said, it won't solve the issue with disappearing trayicons of mostly older apps, when explorer.exe crashes.

But I have to ask you guys something, I still think it's weird that Windows Explorer has this strange 3 seconds delay when files are grouped by type and sorted by date. Do you also get to see this? On Win XP and Win 8 this never happened. So something isn't right with Win 10 and I wonder if this problem persists on Win 11. And if I turn off realtime protection in Windows Defender it still happens.

No, it won't do anything for tray icons.

What file system do you have on the drive where you see this delay? I see the same on an exFAT partition.

It's the NTFS file system. To clarify, I see this delay everytime I open a folder in Windows Explorer, but only if files are sorted by date. So if it's sorted by type, it won't happen. And I have just seen that even when files are NOT grouped, it still happens, so this plays no role. So basically Win Explorer needs time to sort files, which wasn't the case on Win XP and Win 8. I can't believe that M$ can't fix this.

They can fix anything. Whether or not they consider it a priority to do so is the question. In this case I assume not.

---The Downloads folder is sorted by date. I am running Windows 11 with an i9 and SSD RAID 0 so I am not seeing a delay. This doesn't help you but it probably contributes to why they likely won't do anything. You could report it as an issue if you haven't but it would probably need a lot of up-votes for anyone to consider it an issue.

OK thanks for checking, then there might somehow be something wrong on my system. I'm using Win 10 1909 and it's partially broken by some patch. But this doesn't play a role since it has always been like this. The good news is that on Win 11 this issue is most likely fixed.

On the laptop I used to use daily, I saw a noticeable performance improvement after upgrading. On some low end hardware Windows 11 is more usable than Windows 10 due to the better performance. Unfortunately, performance is not as good as Windows 8.1. I'd say it lies somewhere in between the performance of 8.1 and 10.

I must say that Win 8.1 and Win 10 perform about the same for me, except for this weird quirk in Windows Explorer which has a delay when sorting files, it's kinda ridiculous if you ask me, never saw such a thing. Hopefully this has been fixed in Win 11, same goes for the ridiculous DPI problems which make a lot of apps look blurry. I even thought about switching to macOS because of this problem.

That's caused by Microsoft Defender and some other antiviruses. If you disable your antivirus and then open a folder in Explorer, you should find that the delay is gone.

Nope, I've checked this out, even when WD is disabled it still happens. But I just realized something, it doesn't happen with my Downloads and Documents folders created by Windows. But it does happen with my Music and Screenshots folders which I have created myself. It also doesn't happen in XYplorer Free, so there is no excuse. I really hope this is fixed in Win 11.

It will also depend on your view settings. List will sort faster than details and so on.

Yes correct, but on Win 8 it didn't matter. It's the most annoying bug I have found in Win 10, besides Win Explorer still not being improved when it comes to remembering sorting options. I always sort by type and group with Details view, but as soon as Win Explorer sees a folder with pictures or videos, it somehow forgets about all this stuff.

I haven't gone this far. But I'm thinking about installing Avira or Bitdefender Free, Win Defender is getting on my nerves.

I have just gone back to being AVless, uninstalled Panda and accidentally enabled Defender's services, I had noticed it ASAP, icons in explorer were loading one by one again, it took me 15 mins to remediate it, thank you MS. :cautious:

OK, so in other words, Win Defender still sucks a bit on Win 11.

Just clean installed Windows 11 and Defender runs just fine. In fact, Windows 11 is fast, even with an HDD. Installing/removing lots of apps, changing setups, 3rd party customization, etc. will junk up any machine and slow it down.

I wouldn't expect many updates for 10 but maybe you will see some fixes for 11...

Yes, it runs just fine on Win 10 too. Except for some annoyances, like WD scanning the same files over and over again, and it also scans non executable files which causes the CPU to spike. Other than this I don't see any major system slowdown. But I also don't like the basic GUI.

I've watched some videos on YouTube and I can't believe how many new annoyances MS has somehow managed to introduce in Win 11. I'm hoping they will be fixed by tools like Open Shell.

What the hell, this is exactly what I've been complaining about for the last 20 years! M$ has never bothered to fix this bug, it was present in Win XP, Win Vista, Win 7/8/10/11. I will check this tool out, very interesting, thanks.

Victek, I'm not running W11 but according to Bertazzoni's link, one of the criteria is: The device is a new install of Windows 11, 22H2 (not upgraded from previous release) is that your case?

Thanks for the clarification. I'm sure my original install was older, which would explain it. I wonder if the feature will be made available more generally?
