There are a few AI/chat enhanced search engines already.

Neeva seems to require that you have an account to use the enhanced features, but youchat can be used without logging in.

In my experience it seems that this new way of searching is exactly what we have been missing from Siri, Alexa, Cortana and google etc.
For some reason these home automation and personal assistants have always been on a different world to chat bots.
I have always said that more people would talk to their devices, if the devices could have a conversation even like the most basic chat bots that have existed for many years.

An example of why a chat search can work better than a regular search.
Search term "Tennessee bakery cornish pasty"
I Live in Cornwall and my son lives in Tennessee.
I tried to search for somewhere in Tennessee where my son could buy a Cornish pasty.
The search engines prioritised my location over the place name used in the search, so gave me results in the UK.
When using the same 4 words in you.com/chat it took more context from my words, and gave a nice selection of options in Tennessee.

Google is experimenting with AI-powered chat tools that are expected to shape the release of a future public product. The testing involves a chatbot and a possible integration into a search engine. The Alphabet corporation is engaged in a top-priority project named ‘Atlas’ within its cloud division to compete with ChatGPT, the popular language chatbot that made a big impact when it was introduced to the public in the latter part of last year.

Google is also conducting experiments on a chatbot called Apprentice Bard, tasking employees with asking questions and receiving comprehensive answers. This utility is similar to ChatGPT. Another division of the company is testing a redesigned search desktop format that could facilitate an AI-driven Q&A style interaction.

Google’s new Apprentice Bard
One of the test products is a chatbot named Apprentice Bard that utilizes LaMDA, Google's language model for dialogue applications, for its conversational capabilities. One of the aforementioned internal memos stated, ‘As a result of ChatGPT, the LaMDA team has been asked to prioritize working on a response to ChatGPT.’
What’s next for Google AI?
The company is also experimenting with an alternative search page that could employ a Q&A format, as per designs seen by CNBC. One design showed the main search page featuring five different prompts for potential questions located directly beneath the main search bar, replacing the current ‘I'm feeling lucky’ bar. It also showed a small chat icon on the far right side of the search bar.

When a question is submitted, the search results display a gray bubble immediately below the search bar, providing more conversational answers compared to conventional search results. Directly under that, the page proposes several supplementary questions related to the initial query. Below that, it displays standard search results with links and headlines. However, as yet, it is uncertain which experiments Google intends to include in future product releases.

The timing of the event is interesting given that Google CEO Sundar Pichai just announced that the company is planning on letting people “interact directly” with its “newest, most powerful language models as a companion to search” soon. Google, long the de facto way to find information on the internet, is likely facing some pressure from Microsoft, which is reportedly planning on integrating ChatGPT into Bing. That could allow Bing to offer more intelligent summaries and results, which is something that Google has struggled with.

Of course, it’s very possible the presentation will be more about tools we’re already familiar with; the invitation contains references to Google Lens, Translate, Shopping, and Maps.

Microsoft is apparently further along with plans to integrate the ChatGPT AI chatbot into its Bing search engine than first suspected. Today, a student named Owen Yin posted up screenshots of the purported Bing ChatGPT feature on Twitter and also on his Medium page. Yin said he was able to access a preview of the Bing ChatGPT feature before it was cut off.

Yin claims that adding ChatGPT will be labeled as the "new Bing". The normal search bar will be replaced by a large white box where you can type in up to 1,000 characters. While the current version of ChatGPT can only access info back to 2021, this new version will apparently be able to access more recent information.

One nice feature that will apparently be part of Bing ChatGPT search results is that you will see links to where it got the information for answers to your questions. This will allow you to check to see if the answer truly has accurate info. It could also allow websites to get traffic and hits from Bing.

Keep in mind that Yin seemingly got access to an early version of Bing with ChatGPT features, so it's possible that one or more of these features might not make it to the final public version. According to data firm Similarweb, ChatGPT received 590 million visits in January from 100 million unique visitors. Investment bank UBS reported that this rate of growth is unprecedented for a consumer application.

Maybe there will be some API to search in "old" way or something.
I played with ChatGPT and it is impressive. However it produces a lot of wrong answers. Sometimes it is obviously wrong while in other times it is wrong in a quite small, sneak ways. The worst part is writing in authoritative manner.
I doubt it will replace search engine completely. Maybe they will integrate it in somewhat "hybrid" way - partially "old" way + ChatGPT here and there?

Whether you have asked it to write you a song in the style of your favourite musician, sneaked in a homework question (500 words on the end of World War Two? no problem), tasked it to write copy for your company website, write a speech or even churn out specific program code, ChatGPT has proved that it can deliver - and in a convincing way.

There has been acres of reporting about its potential threat to a wide range of jobs, and indeed to our entire model of education if students can get their coursework done and university applications written instantly via ChatGPT or its rivals.

We tried to get it to write an article for the BBC website, and the journalist who worked on it said it needed lots of prompting and revisions before there was something even close to being of a quality we might publish. In the end it still was not good enough, so we didn't.

But the creators of ChatGPT have a far more lucrative goal in mind than simply taking my job. The bigger picture is the multi-billion dollar sector that is internet search. And that is why it has been dubbed the Google killer.

ERNIE is the acronym for Enhanced Representation through Knowledge Integration and is based on a language model developed in-house. The Chinese giant is then in a race against Google to release its chatbot first. After this news broke, the Baidu (BIDU) stock jumped 16%. It only proves the expectation chatbots generate for investors and the market in general. But Baidu is just the latest one in a long string of top players becoming AI-aware lately.

Whether the stock move is pure speculation or not remains to be seen. However, nobody can deny these AI tools are very likely the tip of the spear for a whole range of new services. Since these could very well completely change how the Internet works, it’s attracting a lot of attention from everyone.

Even if AI chatbots don’t succeed in creating a paradigm shift, they’ll still be invaluable tools for further research and refining. In this sense, they will never fail. This is why the prospect of investing in these companies is very attractive currently.

Microsoft has announced a new version of its search engine Bing, powered by an upgraded version of the same AI technology that underpins chatbot ChatGPT. The company is launching the product alongside new AI-enhanced features for its Edge browser, promising that the two will provide a new experience for browsing the web and finding information online.

“It’s a new day in search,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella at an event announcing the products. Nadella argued that the paradigm for web search hasn’t changed in decades, but that AI can deliver information more fluidly and quickly than traditional methods.
“The race starts today, and we’re going to move and move fast,” Nadella said. “Most importantly, we want to have a lot of fun innovating again in search, because it’s high time.”

In demos today the company showed what it’s calling “the new Bing” working in various configurations. One of these shows traditional search results side-by-side with AI annotations (above), while another mode lets users talk directly to the Bing chatbot, asking it questions in a chat interface like ChatGPT (below).

Unlike ChatGPT, the new Bing can also retrieve news about recent events. In The Verge’s demos, the search engine was even able to answer questions about its own launch, citing stories published by news sites in the last hour.

Bing tries to keep answers fun and factual, but given this is an early preview, it can still show unexpected or inaccurate results based on the web content summarized, so please use your best judgment.
Bing will sometimes misrepresent the information it finds, and you may see responses that sound convincing but are incomplete, inaccurate, or inappropriate. Use your own judgment and double check the facts before making decisions or taking action based on Bing’s responses.
And in early hands-ons with the new Bing today, we saw that not all its mistakes will be easy ones to catch.

The company’s FAQ basically suggests that Bing’s results will only be as accurate as the information it finds on the internet, and while that’s a bit of a cop-out, I’m personally all for teaching people to doubt the things that they read and see. “Make sure to check the facts” is good advice for life, period. The new AI is unnamed for now, only described in a blog post as following:

…A new, next-generation OpenAI large language model that is more powerful than ChatGPT and customized specifically for search. It takes key learnings and advancements from ChatGPT and GPT-3.5 – and it is even faster, more accurate and more capable.
“Customized specifically for search” was repeated by multiple executives at the Microsoft event, so it must be some agreed-upon language that doesn’t over-commit the model’s capabilities one way or the other. They did call it a “new large language model,” though how much of a step up it is from OpenAI’s previous ones is hard to say. Speculation was that it was GPT-4, but so far that term has not been used. I’ve asked OpenAI for more information and will update if I hear back.

One of the drawbacks of large models like these is the immense computing power required to run them, which has led many a prospective ChatGPT user to wait a few minutes before getting a session going. Microsoft’s focus on scaling makes sense, especially since it will certainly be footing the compute and server bill.

Unlike ChatGPT and the other GPT models, the AI-powered Bing is accessed directly through a normal search interface, and wrapped in a Microsoft-created safety system they call Prometheus.
Prometheus is part of a safety and control layer around the model that acts as a sanitizer and filter, watching for obviously inappropriate or incorrect results.

Since AI research startup OpenAI released experimental chatbot ChatGPT in late November, it has taken the world by storm. ChatGPT can write human-sounding essays, good enough for some schools to ban the chatbot within their walls, compose poetry, give advice on how to get rich, write code, including malware, explain stocks to a 5th grader — all of this for free and without ads.

There are also things that ChatGPT cannot do (yet): it still fails at brain teasers (but is getting better), does not know what time your train arrives, can spout historical and geographical untruths with the confidence of that annoying person that seems to know everything.

In all fairness, on its prompt page, ChatGPT warns that it may “occasionally produce incorrect information” and “occasionally produce harmful instructions or biased content.”

Still, despite ChatGPT’s limitations, its popularity has led experts to wonder whether it is a match that will set the search engine industry ablaze and even spark a downfall of Google Search — the world’s most popular search engine with an 84% market share among desktop browsers.
