Does anyone know or use Glimpse on Linux, especially Ubuntu? I’ve heard rumours that this is abandonware. Latest stable release was 12th November 2021. I’m just curios. Thanks.

Yes, I use it regularly on macOS and Ubuntu. I like to have back-ups though. Just in case.

Apparently even the last release of Glimpse is sandboxed on Linux, so still pretty secure (allegedly). Unlike the security nightmare that is everything Windows. ;)

Do you mean because for Ubuntu Glimpse is offered as snap? Yes, I noticed. Also Flatpak and AppImage are available.
For GIMP on the other hand, the official package from your distro is recommended, however a Flatpak build is available.

By the way, if you have GIMP installed on Ubuntu 22.04, did you notice the issue that I reported in the GIMP thread, Nov 25? I noticed on Kubuntu 22.04.1, but the sources also mention Ubuntu.

No, I haven't had any problems, not that I've noticed anyway.

GIMP and Pinta running on Focal Fossa.

Oh, my mistake, I was under the assumption you were running Jammy Jellyfish. The issue that I mentioned was on 22.04, not 20.04. And even on 22.04, GIMP runs OK, that's not the issue, the problem is wslu is pulled in when the GIMP help packages are installed, and that creates issues. But that is all off topic in this Glimpse thread.

I am running Jammy now (on a new machine). The Pinta and GIMP snap run fine on Jammy for me.

I didn't know a GIMP snap was available and was offered on Ubuntu. Good to know!
I assume the GIMP snap version doesn't have the issues that the non-snap repository version has (pulling in wslu when the GIMP help packages are installed), as probably the help packages are included in the snap.

Thanks very much for mentioning GIMP snap. :thumb:
On Kubuntu, some applications, like Pinta, for instance, are offered both as snap and as non-snap repository version. But for GIMP, the snap version isn't offered in Discover Software Center, so I wasn't aware of the snap option. Thanks again for mentioning.

Regarding Glimpse, thanks for bringing that to the attention.
I was aware of the Glimpse project, but I didn't know it was put on hold, or perhaps even abandoned.
I found the 2021 Glimpse post A Project On Hiatus, and also the OMG! Ubuntu! article GIMP Fork ‘Glimpse’ on Pause, No More Updates Planned.
Edit: Oh wait, you mentioned that already!

You're welcome. Snaps have a dodgy reputation, but in my experience, a lot are just as good as the repo versions if not better (and more secure). Exceptions are the Opera and Brave snaps, which aren't good. Firefox is excellent as a snap on Ubuntu (just as good as the repo). With the bonus that it's even more secure.
