They keep the feature updates only on iso. builds so you’re getting only bug and security fixes on whatever Windows 11 build you’re running. If you don’t need new features, you can run what you have forever!

 

No apart from having to do a clean install, the new features like drag and drop brought back to the taskbar and tabbed file browsing make Windows 11 what it should have been at launch last year.

Is anyone else having any sound issues with Windows 11? I noticed a couple of days ago that my laptop doesn't play sound most of the time. It always plays the startup sound when it boots (the reason I did not notice sooner) but other sounds randomly play or not. I am assuming it is not a hardware issue as it works fine when it works. I reloaded the driver, ran SFC and DISM and it continues to function when it feels like it. If it's just me I'll have to continue to troubleshoot. If it's anyone else I'll know it's yet another broken Microsoft update.

 

Installed my Windows 11 drive for the cumulative and security updates and briefly checked the sound. I've got the startup sound, UAC sound and hooked/unhooked my phone via USB port--all playing as expected. I went to the Advanced sound settings and went thru some of the Events, and they all played.

So no, the absence of sound is not an issue here Hmmm.

Edit: KBs 5021866 and 5012070 just got installed and sounds are still playing as expected.

Re-edit: This is Insiders Beta channel, and very, very often, I am dodging bullets others experience in the mainstream channel. Just an observation.

 

Thanks for checking. I am on the Release Preview channel but I don't think that is ahead of standard updates at the moment. Still troubleshooting but the sound works for a few minutes after a reboot and then just stops playing for an unknown reason. Toggling "Audio enhancements" sometimes gets it working again for a minute and then it stops again. Weird stuff.

Edit:
I found a troubleshooter in Windows 11 that replaced the Realtek driver with a Microsoft one. Not sure if that will be the final solution but it seems to play sound now.

Checked in Device Manager, I also have the Microsoft driver. Hmm.

 

It's usually fine to use the Microsoft driver if you don't need to use any of the extra features that the OEM driver has. It's possible that Microsoft will provide the OEM driver as an optional update in Windows Update.

 

Correct. The problem in this case is that the Realtek Audio Console app says no device installed instead of giving settings for the device. On my desktop at home when Microsoft slips in their own driver for USB I only get USB 2 speeds instead of USB 3. The Microsoft drivers are probably more stable in most cases but always check for lost functionality.

 

Yes, OK, you're right. The only driver that's third party on here is the NVIDIA one. Even my keyboard--I block the installation of the Razer software when I can. Same goes for my Logitech mouse--all Microsoft-driven. No problems, running great.

I keep the NV driver as bloat-free as possible, it's otherwise nching closer and closer to 1 GB as time goes on.

 

I always replace generic Microsoft drivers with OEM ones, except in the rare cases that OEM drivers cause issues.

 

I can't believe that MS didn't implement such a feature already in Win 8 and Win 10. It's so annoying that when explorer.exe crashes, certain trayicons will disappear and you will have to kill and restart these mostly older apps. So now they are going to migrate certain functionality from the explorer.exe to the ShellApRuntime.exe process.

They did, but not by default, it saved me from tons of problems over the years.

That isn't the same what you're talking about. It doesn't solve anything to run Win Explorer in separate process, and this setting has always been around, you don't need the registry to fix this, you can enable this via Win Explorer options. Or am I misunderstanding?

It sure seems to be the same for me, but then again Windows 11 handles taskbar differently. Everything is UWP app now, like Start, Settings and such.

 

I can't really follow you. But I highly doubt that this setting was always present in Win 8 and 10. What they are trying to do in Win 11 is to stop Win Explorer crashes from affecting the desktop, taskbar and tray.

 

That is exactly what that reg setting does? When I restart the first process, it restarts taskbar/desktop, file explorer windows stay open. When I restart the second process, taskbar stays intact and only file explorer closes. When onedrive was causing crashes to the explorer lately trying to right click on files, it prevented my taskbar from restarting.

 

Weird, aren't you talking about the ''launch folder windows in a separate process'' option? I always enable this setting and it will result in at least two explorer.exe processes being active. However, this does nothing to stop certain trayicons from disappearing once explorer.exe crashes. So I think you are completely misunderstanding what this new feature in Win 11 is about.

 

I assume he is as well. I find this to make Explorer more likely to crash and slows things down. It also caused issues with Kaspersky in the past but I no longer use it so I don't know if that is still the case. I leave this option unchecked.
