Many consumers have had an extraordinarily hard time getting an NVIDIA RTX 30-series GPU at MSRP over the course of 2020 and 2021 due to the global chip shortage.

According to a report, the chip shortage will not be stopping NVIDIA from forging ahead with its 2022 RTX 40-series release plans.

Said report reiterates earlier claims that NVIDIA will be in a better position to actualize its plans as a result of its contracting TSMC as opposed to Samsung.

Though the global chip shortage persists, a new report indicates that won't be stopping NVIDIA from powering forward with its 2022 launch of the GeForce RTX 40-series graphics cards. [...] it seems the company is confident its shift from Samsung to TSMC will solve a chunk of the problems when it comes to keeping up with demand.

A previous report indicated that a trifecta of circumstances would lead to consumer semiconductor concerns being eliminated in the latter half of 2022 (or, if not entirely eliminated, then greatly reduced). One of said circumstances was NVIDIA contracting TSMC for its 5nm capabilities, moving away from Samsung's less capable setup.

Now, DigiTimes' latest scoop claims that this change will indeed facilitate the anticipated 2022 launch of NVIDIA's next wave of GPUs (via WCCF Tech). They will be RTX 40-series cards based on Ada Lovelace architecture.

Nvidia to announce next-gen GPU architecture in September amid RTX 4090 rumors
RTX 40-series cards could be on the way soon

Nvidia is getting ready to announce its next-gen GPU architecture, codenamed Lovelace. Ampere is the current GPU architecture that powers Nvidia’s RTX 30-series GPUs, after Turing debuted with the first RTX cards in 2018. Nvidia is now expected to detail its Lovelace GPU architecture at GTC 2022 in September, with CEO Jensen Huang hinting at an announce during the company’s recent earnings call.

“We’ll get through this over the next few months and go into next year with our new architecture,” said Huang, while discussing a slowdown in gaming GPU demand. “I look forward to telling you more about it at GTC next month.”

A new GPU architecture announce doesn’t mean we’ll see RTX 40-series GPUs immediately, though. Nvidia first unveiled its Ampere architecture for data centers, before launching its RTX 30-series cards for consumers months later. There’s always a slight delay between an architecture announce and consumer GPU launch. With the RTX 20-series that was just a week, so it doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll be waiting months.

The reason RTX 30-series and 40-series will likely co-exist is because Nvidia has built too many GPUs.
The crypto crash has affected GPU demand, and the excess inventory makes it more difficult to predict when Nvidia is likely to actually put its RTX 40-series cards on shelves.

Nvidia wants the world to know it’s getting ready to launch its next-gen 40-series GPUs. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang will hold a special “GeForce Beyond” keynote at the company’s GTC 2022 conference on September 20th.

Nvidia is widely expected to announce its 40-series GPUs at this event after the company confirmed it would discuss its next-gen GPU architecture at GTC. Codenamed Lovelace, the next GPU architecture will usher in the new RTX 40-series graphics cards to replace Nvidia’s existing Ampere architecture.

Rumors continue to suggest Nvidia is working on RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 GPUs. The monster RTX 4090 was originally rumored as a July release, and it could offer a big performance boost over existing RTX 3090 and even RTX 3090 Ti cards.

"Scalpers Sell Nvidia's RTX 4090 for $2,500, and Some People Are Paying Up...

The RTX 4090 went on sale early Wednesday morning, where various models quickly sold out, despite the product’s high starting price of $1,599.

Some of those purchased units are now being resold on eBay at inflated costs ranging from $2,200 to as high as $4,499...

According to eBay’s Terapeak tool, dozens of merchants sold 135 units of the RTX 4090 on Wednesday, for an average price of $2,524 so far. The stats say two buyers spent $4,299 for an Asus ROG RTX 4090 OC, which normally retails for $1,999..."

GPUs have been a hot commodity but this is ridiculous. Nvidia's use of a 600W power socket and cable with its RTX graphics cards may have sounded like a good idea at the time but some users have reported overheating issues.

One unlucky user uploaded photos of an Nv-branded 12VHPWR power cable that had melted where it plugs into their RTX 4090. The cable feeds power from the PC's PSU into the GPU card.

"It smelled badly and I saw smoke," the Redditor explained, adding that the power connector appeared to be the issue since the card still worked despite the damage sustained.

Lawyers representing Genova are seeking to gain class-action status for the lawsuit, which would allow anyone who purchased an RTX 4090 card to seek damages. This excludes those who bought an RTX 4090 for reselling purposes.

The lawsuit is also looking to form a sub-class of New York residents who purchased the card because it alleges violations of two state statutes related to deceptive business practices.

If class-action status is granted, the number of class members would be in the thousands, according to lawsuit, though the precise number is currently unknown.

While the RTX 4070 isn’t Nvidia’s most powerful mobile GPU, it boasts some impressive capabilities.

With the faster RTX 4090 and 4080, Nvidia claims that laptops can push a 4K resolution picture to three monitors at once at 60 frames per second (game-dependent, I’m guessing), and it claims that they provide two times faster video exports compared to the previous generation graphics chips.

Pricey laptops... not much gives a greater sense of buyer's remorse. I wish I had spent half the money for a lesser model instead of paying $3,000 for one that I pretty much use just to type these posts on. No time for gaming. No way to upgrade it later.

Nvidia announces GeForce RTX 4070 Ti, launching January 5 for $799

It’s still not what most people would consider “affordable,” but if you want to get into Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4000 series for less than $1,000, you’ll have a chance in a couple of days. The company’s GeForce RTX 4070 Ti will launch on January 5 starting at $799, $400 less than the MSRP of the RTX 4080 and $100 less than the originally planned 12GB version of the 4080.

As regulatory filings previously indicated, the RTX 4070 Ti is identical to the canceled 12GB version of the RTX 4080, which Nvidia "unlaunched" via a terse press release after widespread complaints about its branding and positioning. The 4070 Ti includes 12GB of GDDR6X memory on a 192-bit memory bus, plus 7,680 of Nvidia's CUDA cores, and it can consume up to 285 W of power (though Nvidia says average power draw when gaming is closer to 226 W).

Comparing spec sheets, the 4070 Ti on paper is a little less than half of an RTX 4090, which includes 24GB of RAM on a 384-bit memory bus and 16,384 CUDA cores. It's a bit closer to the RTX 4080, which has 16GB of memory on a 256-bit bus and 9,728 CUDA cores.

In brief: Nvidia's RTX 4070 Ti arrived at the start of the month with an MSRP of $800. Most people agree that it's too expensive, and finding one at this price is no easy feat (but still doable). But the criticism doesn't appear to be damaging sales of the latest Lovelace entry, especially in Germany.

TechEpiphany (via VideoCardz) tweeted the latest sales figures from German hardware retailer Mindfactory, which show that 545 RTX 4070 Ti models were sold in the third week of January alone. For comparison, that's more than the combined sales of the Radeon RX 7900 XTX, RX 7900 XT, and Intel Arc A770/A380 -- only 20 Intel cards were sold in the same week, admittedly.

The GeForce RTX 4070 Ti isn't performing too shabbily in the US, either. It's the third best-selling graphics card on Amazon, sitting behind the RTX 3060 and Ti variant, and it takes up two positions on Newegg's best-selling GPU chart: fifth and eighth.

VideoCardz writes that it attained embargo documents from Nvidia revealing release information for the RTX 4070. The embargo information is listed as To Be Determined (TBD), but the on-shelf date, which is the actual launch, is down as April.

The RTX 4070 is, of course, the recently released RTX 4070 Ti's (formerly the RTX 4080 12GB) little brother. Like its sibling, the card will likely be based on the AD104 GPU and pack 12GB of GDDR6X memory.

That brings us to the all-important price. The RTX 4070 Ti launched with a $799 MSRP, though finding one at that price point isn't easy. As we noted in our review of the card, it should cost no more than $700. Nvidia has taken plenty of justifiable criticism for its pricing strategy for the Ada Lovelace series, so it will be interesting to see how much it has listened, if at all, when it comes to the RTX 4070.
