Question: There is a command line option to "merge" a differential image into a new full image file. I have attempted to use this in Windows 11. The command completes with: "Snapshot finished successfully". However attempting to view the resulting "full" image ("Map and Explore Virtual Drive") yields the message: "this is not a valid Snapshot volume file"). Attempting a "Restore Disk from File" also results in the same message. Performing an image validation test from the command prompt results with the message: "xxx.sna does not contain a valid end record".

Has anyone had any experience with the "merge" option? Are there any known issues - or magic tricks - with this option? Or, is this option simply something that does not work with Windows 11? Has anyone tried this option with Windows 10?

Amazing seemingly primitive little backup program but absolutely longevity time-tested and on this end at least still solid & reliable.

Does anyone have any inkling of a clue why DS hasn't by now also an incremental feature? We all know it does differentials.
It must be (maybe) something in it's developer's proprietary code/driver arrangement. Its a fabulous (for me) trouble/error free backup/restore disk system, but often wondered why not adapt incrementals to round it out.

DS was developed on the KISS principle 20+ years ago and that continues to be their paradigm. While it is tiny in size, portable and very reliable, it is far from being feature-rich; lacking (in addition to incremental backups) scheduling of backups and its own WinPE recovery media-builder, not to mention other 'bells and whistles'.

Yeah everyone is all too aware of that aspect. It seems that it wouldn't require any bell/whistles to simply have an incremental feature though, or so the story goes. Not so unrealistic it might seem but only the developer knows. Personally as i continue to toot the horn in it's favor it's a basic solid backup/restore program be it main or alternative secondary.

When i recently used Aomei Backupper it's slower imaging but not by a whole lot. I think DS keeping it's standard grey windows 98 GUI suits fine & perfect enough that it does the task and without error or other mischief. I'm glad @pvsurfer that you mention 20+ years. That's a stellar track record for any windows application, especially one with as much as importance as these imager's are.

I personally hope the developer of Drive Snapshot never changes his program as he is one of the few developers to stick with a winning formula and deserves money unlike the likes of Acronis, who bloat up their products with useless features and other gimmicks but people will still rent such software. The mind boggles.

I've used Drive Snapshot for years to replace the once excellent Symantec Ghost (not the terrible Norton Ghost) and it cost me I think under £30, so divide that by six years and for now it cost less than £5 per year and never have had a failure on anyone's computer that I've used Drive Snapshot on.

    I agree with all that.

Version 1.50 saw the executables more than double in size. I mentioned about it here. For years, the sizes hardly changed. Maybe it's the SFTP server support, which I won't use.

It may not be a big deal, but I'm just going to stick with last version before 1.50 [1.49.0.19135 (x64)] until I see some more positive reports.

I tested it briefly, but when I get around to it, I'll do more.
I run it on all my computers as well as in a TeraByte Recovery Environment (TBWinRE).

I saw that too. If it's running and performing without error i'm also keeping the older version since i too don't need use of the SFTP server support whatsoever. It's been helpful the DS scripts shared on here too. Automating DS operations via batch is totally good.

    Agreed.

Someone mentioned in the other thread that their license expired.
I have a valid current license, but I just can't see the point of rushing into it when it doesn't appear to offer me any benefits.
The changelog also mentions Server 2022 and Windows 11 support, but previous versions work fine on Windows 11 for me.

I was going to take a look at 1.50 out of curiosity but my license has expired.

At much as I think the program is great I'm not going to pay again as the older version has been perfect on every computer that I've used it on and is future proof for a long time to come (despite companies pretending that you need to update software).

I have a license for 1.50, but I'm going to stick with 1.49 for now.
