With how much user interaction needed?
For me VS agressive smart or autopilot with (allow by parent process) wants a lot more user interaction then H_C with max and more tweaks than recommended activated.
For me VS is a lot more chatty for safe stuff while H_C just runs it without questions asked.

 

I've been using Defender UI for about 2 mo. on "Interactive" and almost never see a warning besides the ASR rule for unknown/uncommon executable files, and even that triggers almost exclusively on new versions of Ungoogled Chromium because the exe's are unsigned. "Aggressive" is similar to "Interactive" except the cloud level is zero trust and the warn rules are set to block, so I think it would be less chatty but might have more FP's than Interactive. (I would use Aggressive for a child or casual user who can't be trusted not to click on questionable things.)

 

Since I don't remember the exact names for the settings in Defender UI Pro anymore just to be clear you are talking about Defender UI Pro? Because if not then of course it's less chatty without VS included.

 

I'm referring to the settings in Defender UI Free. (I haven't had occasion to try Pro yet.)

Not sure there's a portable version of this and if there is I don't have it. A cut to the chase--- delete app and clean reinstall or just reinstall over the top of Version 1.01 for an update? Thanks in advance.

Final edit: Interestingly, no reference to the newest version on DefenderUI.com or some of my other go to sites for the newest available versions of apps (Softpedia,,,. Feel free to have the last laugh.)

Installed over the top of Version 1.01 with zero hitches. Verified with BCUninstaller and Total Uninstall with no double entries of the app. (There's been instances of updating apps via PatchMyPC where updates have 2 fully downloaded apps such as Vivaldi, etc., are wasting space on the hard drive.) Lastly, verified with Agent Ransack file searcher. BTW, a file search engine as thorough as "Everything" with more stability and a more polished interface, albeit a bit slower because of the difference in search methodology. I have all of my browsers pinned to the task bar, I can run a file search on Brave, Vivaldi, Iridium, SRWare, etc., and pause on the Agent Ransack search results as soon as the exe file or shortcut shows up on any browser-- mouse right click to add to Sandboxie-- and bingo. And as you may've guessed, same applies to any other app you wanna toss into the Sandboxie.

Just another of perhaps hundreds of thousands of useless opinions on Wilders, but I'm really liking this app through its GUI to its intended functionality. I would be majorly tempted to make the leap to VoodooShield were it not for the fact that simplewall and Sandboxie are alive and thriving on this system. There's always well to do as third party app protection goes and then there's the dreaded and to be avoided overkill.

 

Reading back through this thread I see my early posts and hope they are not taken as anything against this program. I am testing it at the moment and like it. My gripes were about Defender itself. Unfortunately the false positives and performance issues persist, but in the cases where I have to deal with it this program will make a nice add-on.

I tried it, and it's cool but I came to the conclusion that I don't really need it, since I don't actually change the settings related to Win Defender that much, so it would be a waste of RAM. But in the future I might use it, it's a good tool.

 

I don't even use Defender on my own PC but I find this tool handy for when I do on someone else's.

 

Yes it's handy. But for now I have decided to stick with ConfigureDefender, you might want to check it out, because it doesn't even need to be installed.

After thinking about this... something that doesn't need to be installed might be a win for me on my machine. On someone else's machine I'd rather leave something behind so that if someone else has to work on it they have evidence of what happened to settings and why. Thanks for the suggestion, it's nice to have both options.

I have never found any benefit of using such tools. All the options that I need are in the main app, turning off protection temporarily, exclusions, etc.

 

Yes that's why I recommended it because I assumed that it's handier to not having to install anything on other people machines, and perhaps it's not always possible to install DefenderUI because it also needs admin access for the service and driver. But I assume you are a system admin, so then it doesn't matter.

It's simply a handy tool for people like me who are not satisfied with WD's current GUI. However, I'm trying to save RAM, so that's why I decided to stick with ConfigureDefender.

 

Yes, that is correct. If someone has to come in behind me some day I pity them despite trying to make it easy for someone else to follow up on things.

 

I realize this is free software so I don't want to sound like I'm complaining too much, but I can't say I love the update method. It opens a UAC prompt after logging in with no other explanation and what is going on. Sure, once you read the program name you can assume that is what is happening but I am always leery of seemingly random unsolicited UAC prompts.

 

Yeah I was wondering about that. I think it should update the same way voodooshield updates. With a "check for updates" button and automatic periodic checking online

Also like DefenderUI Free combined with VoodooShield and together that would be DefenderUI Pro.
But VoodooShield has a user log and an editable whitelist among other things that DefenderUI Pro doesn't have.
So, my preference is still DefenderUI Free coupled with VoodooShield, but I will keep an eye out on the developments of DefenderUI Pro.

 

DefenderUI free with voodooshield paid is the best way to go.

Defender UI pro is just defenderUI with A LOT less voodooshield....from what I understand.
