Ok, now the icon has disappeared totally. 2 TW processes running per task manager. Chip is my account. Pretty clever naming my computer chip, yes? I've tried all the typical task manager solutions, deleting the icon cache, restarting explorer etc etc. I downloaded TW and tried to repair but it said it couldn't. I guess I could save the .ini and delete and reinstall?
If there are any logs inside C:\ProgramData\TinyWall please send them to me. You could try reinstalling TinyWall, if this is a permission issue it may solve that. But always use the uninstaller in Windows' Add or Remove Programs, never delete files manually or use a 3rd party uninstaller. If there's an issue uninstalling, let me know instead of trying other methods.
Thanks, I may try uninstalling now. Where is the .ini file (or whatever) so I don't need to re se up the entire program and all my settings? Here is the file that was in the log folder.
There is no "ini" (or other kind of) file you can copy for a backup. Instead, you can backup TinyWall's settings by going to the Manage window's last tab and doing an export into a file there. If you install TinyWall again (on the same or a different computer), you can import that exported file to recreate the exact same configuration. Thanks. I looked at it, but unfortunately nothing of interest is recorded there. Entries are either harmless or have been resolved, and latest is a month old. Let me know if a reinstall helps.
Ok thank you. Problem though - there is no TW icon so I can't get to the manage tab! I see a config file where the log folder was - is that it?
You can launch the program and the Tw icon should appear. Either look in the program folder or write Tinywall in the Search bar
Yes, after I posted that I went and found the TW .exe and launched it and the icon appeared. I thought that wouldn't work because the icon wasn't there in the system tray but it did. Anyhow - issue resolved. Reinstallation of TW brought the icon back at boot - thanks all.
Anyone else having issues unblocking the new Minecraft Launcher? When I try to, no matter what options I select the OK button stays grayed out. https://i.imgur.com/ZctggPp.jpg
Hi! The path format there looks wrong. You are probably trying to whitelist either from the Connections windows or through auto-learning. None of which is wrong of course, but please make sure you are running the latest TinyWall version from the homepage (v3.2.5). Ever since 3.0 and even 3.1 there have been numerous improvements to path handling, if you are not on the latest version you might be running into an already fixed bug. If you are already on the latest TinyWall version, as a workaround you can try "Browse for a file" in the same window, that should give you the correct path. And in this case also let me know what kind of partition is Minecraft installed on. Is it something special like a dynamic volume, an encrypted disk, or anything that required installing drivers not found in Windows by default?
Thanks for the response. I am indeed on 3.2.5. Browse for file just takes me to my Downloads folder, not wherever Minecraft is saying it is. I tried navigating to and whitelisting the executable directly, but get the attached error. I chose this file as it's the only Minecraft.exe that is found on my system. The full path is: C:\Users\xxxx\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.4297127D64EC6_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Local\Microsoft\WritablePackageRoot Edit: I should note that I am running TinyWall with Elevated permissions as well Minecraft just reports that it is installed on the C: drive.
Yes, that's what I meant, to navigate to and select Minecraft.exe using "Browse for a file". I didn't expect the "File cannot be accessed" error though, that might be why the original method of whitelisting also failed. I'll try installing Minecraft (trial) on my system and see if I can reproduce this.
Thanks, I can reproduce the issue on my PC, so I shouldn't need any more info, except for maybe feedback on a future fix. I'm still looking for a way to unblock the launcher myself too...
Hi all, I recently started to poke around my old laptop, discovered I have set a password for TinyWall which was installed many years ago and my old head have totally forgotten that, what is the best way to remediate this or is uninstall the only way? Also, if there's no way around than forcefully remove it, is it still possible to save the settings?
I had been having the same issue with the new Minecraft launcher since early January with 3.2.5, as well as with a couple of other Xbox Game Pass games that show up using the same style \device\ paths. Adding through Show connections or browsing for an executable in Manage didn't work for me either, and while I could add its entry as a UWP app (showed up as Microsoft.4297127D64EC6, no actual name but it matches based on other searches) that did nothing either. Auto-learning actually worked around the issue for me, and while I can't edit the created rule due to the same greyed-out OK issue, the rule itself does seem to work - Sable is the other application/game that I've been able to do that workaround with. I have not yet tried re-importing my backup, but the XML chunk that seems to be working for Minecraft is below if someone wants to test it out. You'd want to edit the volume # to match what you see in the connection manager and place it inside <d2p1:AppExceptions>. Code: <d2p1:FirewallExceptionV3> <d2p1:CreationDate>2022-01-04T00:45:16.5807302-05:00</d2p1:CreationDate> <d2p1:Id>f2cdbc05-6505-4d34-a5f9-7a4ea81a53c3</d2p1:Id> <d2p1:policy i:type="d2p1:TcpUdpPolicy"> <d2p1:AllowedLocalTcpListenerPorts>*</d2p1:AllowedLocalTcpListenerPorts> <d2p1:AllowedLocalUdpListenerPorts>*</d2p1:AllowedLocalUdpListenerPorts> <d2p1:AllowedRemoteTcpConnectPorts>*</d2p1:AllowedRemoteTcpConnectPorts> <d2p1:AllowedRemoteUdpConnectPorts>*</d2p1:AllowedRemoteUdpConnectPorts> </d2p1:policy> <d2p1:Subject i:type="d2p1:ExecutableSubject"> <d2p1:ExecutablePath>\device\harddiskvolume17\minecraft.exe</d2p1:ExecutablePath> </d2p1:Subject> </d2p1:FirewallExceptionV3>
Hmm, going over the Import function is creative workaround that should work as long as the harddiskvolumeXX part doesn't change on one's computer. For a little context, for anybody interested in what the technical problem with unblocking the Minecraft Launcher is: The app path is reported in the kernel format and on a volume that is not mappable to any filesystem path. I tried to retrieve the process path manually using Process Explorer running elevated and it also cannot show any path, so it is not just TinyWall. The working directory *can* be retrieved but I've tried to whitelisting using that and it didn't help. The next thing I checked is if this is related to app containers in Windows. I successfully found (using a new API in Windows that TinyWall hasn't been using until now) a container related to Minecraft Launcher on my computer. So I modified TinyWall to use this API to get to this container and whitelisted it, but that didn't help either and the Launcher was still blocked. So for now the only way to whitelist the Launcher seems to be to use the \device\harddiskvolumeXX\... based path, but the GUI currently rejects this. Unless a new revelation is made somehow, the solution for unblocking the Minecraft Launcher in a user-friendly way might be to just simply allow such paths in the GUI.
Just to let you know, I didn't upgrade because of the simple reason the current older version is working just fine on my system, but still thanks for all of the work.
Went to Uninstall TinyWall because it suddenly stopped working and it won't let me. Keeps throwing this error: https://i.imgur.com/5hXVWRZ.png Downloaded the setup again from the main site, still same error. EDIT: By the way. I've been using TinyWall for years as my go-to firewall, thank you you, truly, for still maintaining it.
The only downside to the workaround should be that you won't be able to edit this rule in the GUI anymore. I'll make it so you won't require the workaround in TW 3.3 anymore. It's close to testing anyway.
Hi! I'm a longtime user of TinyWall, however, I was never able to get shared folders working if I'm connected to a VPN. I'm using the win 10 built-in VPN client to connect to my workplace's Windows 2019 Server machine. The internet settings in the taskbar shows that I'm connected to the VPN network, but I can't access the file shares on the server until I disable Tinywall. https://imgur.com/a/beZpzcq It's the System app and the remote address is 192.168.10.3 (the address of the server I'm trying to access on the VPN). The only solution is so far is turning off Tinywall or allow the System app through the firewall, neither is optimal... I'm not versed in network security, so I'd really appreciate if anyone could point me to the direction where I could solve this issue. Thanks in advance.
