It's something new to me. Very intriguing.

 

you already have backups, why not restoring a profile in %appdata%? (or elsewhere)

in fact firefox and opera are the only real (!) portable browsers. this means that there is no loss in profile(s) which need to be recovered. any other will lose extensions and passwords. chromium it self is able to recover extensions, it need to load from web, but passwords are gone.

portable firefox has disadvantages:
- no secure folders by default - firefox and its profile are vulnerable to any attack

only exception is a folder inside windows user profile, most common: desktop. but: firefox is also vulnerable to attacks, not only the used profile. the regular installed firefox is only accessible when malware is elevated, a limited user account will ask for admins password.

- the installed version (%program files%) is secured by windows
- profiles under the hood of user rights, not available to other (registered) users

more advantages for the installed version
- installed versions is available for any user (standard installation)
- you can redirect profiles with profiles.ini to any location.
- you cant set firefox as default browser - no tricks for the starter as default" browser"
- you only need one firefox to start several profiles same time

a pre-baked profile from scratch is close the same like deleting any data when exiting firefox or using private browsing.

not sure if no one has told you before but at least its like that.

 

actually that's the way i do it. just replace the profile folder with my backup.

my portable browsers are running from user space with limited rights and are secured and protected with h_c by andyful.

i never use physical machines. always on vm's protected by msd on hosts protected by kaspersky.

 

not a problem. i don't use no default apps for any file types on my rigs.
