They're all an incremental update after Vista. I have a laptop that has been upgraded from Vista to 7, 8, 8.1, and all releases of 10. Without reformatting. This will be actually the first time I can't upgrade due to the hardware requirements.

Wow man really? I did an upgrade last night at home, but plan on a clean install when I get a chance. At work I am definitely ready for a clean install. Impressive you have upgraded through all those versions of Windows with no issues I assume?

No issues that I have noticed. It was always just a pain to track down all of the drivers so I never bothered. Still seems to run fine. I put in SSDs so it is still usable but obviously slower than the new one. I am surprised myself that it works. I remember having to format and reinstall Windows 95 monthly back in the day so things have improved from XP forward.

Guess it will take myself a little longer to actually upgrade to 11. On the new windows 10 machine I also have used up what scant space the SSD has when I bought it which isn't much really. My 8 units are 1Tb but Windows 10 only has 120Gb most of which are already used up. So it's gonna take me some days to transfer a lot of data off first. I didn't prepare because it just isn't a priority right now and I would rather Micro issue bug fixes first anyway instead of downloading them now and becoming frustrated.

I just downloaded and ran the Win 11 Installation Assistant and installed 11 here... everything went fine. This morning Win Updates told me my machine was ok for 11, which I already knew, but I figured who knows how long it would be before it was offered in Win Updates... could be days, weeks or even months if they're rolling it out slowly. So now I'm all set. Making a Macrium image of my new 11 install now.... :)

If you can't wait, you can always upgrade via iso. Painless regardless of whether your PC is officially supported, especially on the processor side.

This is ridiculous... my Surface Pro 3 has the same specifications. What can I say....in real life the processor has no problem running Windows 11! Nonsense like this from Microsoft has discredited the company. The so-called incompatibility is a function of the installer and not the hardware and is purely artificial. All the other requirements are fully met. Throwing away a perfectly capable PC because of the processor? Only Microsoft could come up with such a conclusion.

Microsoft received so much backlash from its user base it had bow down to the inevitable. People are telling it what they think of its ridiculous hardware requirements and the plans the company had for Windows 11 to run only on select PCs are already out of the window.

Everyone remembers when they pushed Windows 10 in our face after launch and we said no. Now Microsoft is doing the opposite with Windows 11 and its having the opposite effect.

The bottom line is people are going to find a way to run Windows 11 on their unsupported PC whether Microsoft likes it or not.

Your Windows 11 install could fail with 0x8007007, Ox8COF0830 errors but there may be fixes

Agree with that, but at the same time I don’t see the reason to rush updating to Windows 11. Especially when we know it always takes 2-3 months to get rid of all the bugs. As for myself I don’t plan to upgrade before 2025 even if my Laptop does support Win 11. And who knows, by then we probably have Windows 12:cool:

The public launch is going worse than I expected. I can't even install it on the laptop I have that supports it because of the "known issues".

so, @xxJackxx , you're one of the few whose opinion i have high regard for here. and, based on your experience, do you think it would be a grave mistake to go for 11 on an unsupported rig? i just don't wanna wait till i get myself a brand new pc.

If you want to check it out make an image of your current setup first so you can roll back when you decide you don't like it or have issues. I'm not going to install it on any unsupported machines. The current claim is that you will get security update (maybe) but no others and as it is full of bugs right now you may not get fixes for those. If your hard drive is easily swappable you could get a cheap spare drive and try it that way and go back and forth as desired.

Alternately if you have the RAM and disk space and can acquire VMware Workstation you can install it there and boot it up when you want to check it out. That is my current solution. You can even virtualize UEFI and TPM 2.0 with it on a machine that doesn't natively support them.

I just ran the MS PC Health Check app and learned that my i7 processor is not supported. Frankly this is a relief since I really don't want to upgrade to "11" at this time and I was afraid Windows Update was going to force it.

I don't think they're going to try to force this like they did Windows 10. It was offered along with the option to stay on Windows 10. Hopefully they won't change this.
