I thought that they still use their own WebKit fork. The beauty of Maxthon was that it didn't need extensions. I really miss Maxthon, but it's gone the way of Opera. :'(

The new Context-Menu option "Translate Selection" is also buggy. It sometimes detects Foreign text as English and so doesn't translate the text. In that case, you have to manually select the correct language in the "Automatic Detection" in Translate Selection, and it then translates the text.

I seriously don't understand why they would release buggy stuff. The same with tab stacking, it's annoying that if you close the first or last tab inside a stack, it will close to the tab that's outside of the stack, depending on how you have configured it. They should be on top of these small quirks.

Yes, just like Opera I don't really trust them anymore. But I think it's a good thing for them that they have switched, it will make them more popular especially in China.

Maxthon was massively popular in China anyway. It is basically Chinese.

    max.jpg

It's available on the Mac App Store. I've not run it on Mac though, it was not too good on Ubuntu from what I can remember. Until Bugvaldi fix the CPU spiking on Mac I'll be using Safari and Firefox predominantly. I wish the Bugvaldi dev's would get their collective shite together and fix the bugs in Vivaldi instead of dreaming up more and more new features for every upgrade. Vivaldi is turning into Opera ASA 2.0.

Yes correct, it's Chinese but I'm sure many people were unhappy that it didn't support popular extensions from the Chrome Store. And I'm sorry to hear that Vivaldi still has the CPU spike problem on macOS. On Windows it's still the best browser though, but I wish they could somehow make it use less RAM. But that's a problem with all Chromium based browsers I guess.

BTW, something I noticed is that strangely enough, when in full screen mode (F11), the main menu and tab-bar won't automatically popup in Vivaldi. Do you know of any browser that offers this feature? I never used the full screen mode that much, so I was actually surprised by this. Actually, I just checked it in Edge and it does work! How could a ''power user'' browser like Vivaldi miss this, ouch!

You have to realise Maxthon existed even before Firefox. It was created by Jeff (Ming Jie) Chen nineteen years ago in Hong Kong specifically as a WebKit alternative to Internet Explorer. The Trident-engined IE was never that good IMO. Apple used IE very early on but eventually realised they could develop their own browser. I'm pretty convinced the WebKit-engined Konqueror browser (1996) was the ancestor of Safari and Maxthon (and ultimately even Chrome). I've used Konqueror on Linux. Konqueror was considered an improvement on both Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer by many. I used Maxthon on Windows for years before Chrome even existed. No one in the Maxthon community cared about Chrome extensions. One of the main reasons that Maxthon existed was that it didn't need extensions and was complete in itself (so more secure). It was originally created for the Windows OS and Unix versions are a recent development. I believe K-Meleon was an early Gecko alternative for Windows, although a Unix version never happened. I'm pretty sure MickeySoft even considered bundling Maxthon with Windows at one time. Maxthon was lightning fast and the portable version was exceptional in my experience. I'm pretty sure Unix platforms are not Vivaldi developers main target market. Probably due to lack of resources. They really have become the spiritual heir to their predecessor; Opera ASA. Every release they add a ton of pointless features and never fix the copious amount of persistent bugs.

I think it works on macOS and Ubuntu.

I've looked it up, seems like both Firefox and MyIE/Maxthon were launched in 2002. I started using Maxthon in 2003 and switched to Opera back in 2006, because of the lack of powerful extensions. To be fair, even Opera's extensions weren't that advanced, because back then it wasn't based on Chromium yet.

I guess it's time to make a bug report, or feature request. This really should be a standard feature. I especially use the fullscreen mode on Instagram, it's a bit difficult to see the full picture on 14 inch laptops.

I think Maxthon was a few months earlier. I forgot about Maxthon's dual core with WebKit and Trident. I have some recollection of a Gecko plug-in as well. I only ever used it in WebKit mode though. What I liked about both Opera and Maxthon was that they didn't need extensions. A lot of extensions are not updated sufficiently and/or become abandonware, notwithstanding security issues. It would be nice to have a browser sufficiently advanced enough in itself to not need third party extensions. This is what I miss most about Mx, although IIRC its adblocker was a tad flakey.

    ext.jpg

The only browser I have that doesn't need anything more than a good adblocker is Safari. It beat Firefox in the Browser Audit test and Chrome/Bugvaldi were beaten by Firefox.

I guess it's time to find a better browser.

Well, they actually did need extensions in my view, because the adblocker in Opera and Maxthon wasn't that advanced. But another thing what I did like about them is the limited amount of RAM they were using, probably because they weren't multi-process based.

Yes Chromium is quite secure, but it's a disaster when it comes to RAM usage. I will make sure that my next laptop and desktop will have at least 16GB RAM, also because Win 10 is way more resource hungry than Win 8, seriously it's so annoying.

No way, are you kidding me, Vivaldi is still the best browser ever. But I agree, they shouldn't be concentrating on stuff like email and calendar. They should first fix all of the annoyances both on Windows and macOS. But I have to say that tab stacking really is quite cool, I now use it all of the time.

I disagree that they needed extensions (especially Maxthon), but you're right about Maxthon and Opera's mediocre adblocking capabilities. Chrome has RAM issues but Bugvaldi's seem off the scale. Also, Safari and Firefox are now slightly more secure than Chrome (and Bugvaldi). Firefox has better extensions although Safari is stuck in its walled garden of Appledom. I literally only have one extension on Safari.

I like Opera ASA 2.0, sorry, I mean Vivaldi. I had high hopes for it. I've been using it for six years. Unfortunately I find I'm using it less and less these days. The heating issue on Unix platforms isn't going to be addressed soon (or ever) and its other bugs are slowly driving me round the bend. Email and calendar were priorities from the start as the whole point of Vivaldi was for von Tetzchner to recreate Opera ASA. Firefox has been my default browser on Ubuntu for seven years. I've never found a browser to replace it. Safari is still my macOS default. I live in hope that one day Vivaldi will be properly usable. But I said that about Opera Presto and it never transpired.

Statistically (Statcounter GlobalStats) Chrome still dominates the desktop market at 66.94%, with Safari at 9.99%, something called 'Edge' (?) at 8.84%, Firefox at 8.07%. Opera now has 2.46% which is probably 2.45% more than it had with Presto. Remarkably IE accounts for 1.43% of the market (probably people still using XP). The three dozen or so people using Vivaldi aren't enough to make an impression in the stats. There's a simple reason why Chrome is so popular. It's bloody reliable.

One possible explanation I’ve been given for Vivaldi’s heating/CPU spiking when running YT videos is that Vivaldi uses VP9-encoded videos. As opposed to Safari’s H.264/AVC-encoded videos.

I have no idea if this is BS or not. ~ Removed Off Topic Remarks ~

I remember at that time, websites were becoming more bloated, so I really needed a better ad and tracking blocker. So that's why I had to dump Maxthon, because it didn't support extensions like Adblock Plus and Ghostery.

I'm not sure if Firefox and Safari are more secure than Chromium based browsers, I highly doubt it. And Vivaldi has been reliable for me so far. But I rather see them making sure that the browser part is picture perfect, before focusing on email and calendar, I mean there are probably third party tools that do a better job anyway.

I believe that Vivaldi's CEO said they needed at least 5 million users in order to make a profit. In my view, they need to make Vivaldi a more privacy focused browser, similar to Brave, in order to attract more users. And they will need to make a deal with Google, who's paying $500 million a year to Mozilla.

Could someone who subscribes to the Times go here:
    https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/25/world/europe/germany-election-merkel.html
I can't get the images to display. First one or two might come in, but all the others are just blank.
I went to Edge which I'm not familiar with so it's not setup. It showed all pictures, so I collected few links.
When I tried those links directly in Vivaldi and SeaMonkey, I could see them quite well. I don't understand what's going on.
Just few image links from the middle of the article

Are you saying you can see the images in Vivaldi without the subscription running?

I can see all images in Vivaldi but don't subscribe to the Times I'm afraid.

When I allow third party scripts in uBlock, I see all images using Firefox ESR v78.14 . If it's off, I only see the 1st few. I don't have a subscription. Chrome portable Version 93.0.4577.82 without any addons shows all images.
