That's funny. Speculation. Remains to be seen on it's public debut release and weeks after where it stacks up.

 

This is insane, why would they mess around with virtual machines, M$ has lost it.

 

After many years of people not needing to upgrade hardware they had to do something to force some sales. My desktop at home is a decade old and aside from replacing the graphics card with a newer better one when it failed it still runs fine. I have a laptop from 2009 that runs Windows 10 after going SSD. They didn't want this to continue. We use VMs at work for software development and testing. We're hoping not to have to ask the boss for new PCs to run VMs for testing.

Windows 11 is an incremental update, really a service pack to Windows 10. It is Windows 10 at the core minus the ui tweak and the new hardware requirements. You don't even need to update any software! Classic Shell and my Nexus dock run exactly the same on Windows 11 as they did on Windows 10. Microsoft didn't overhaul anything, so there's nothing revolutionary about it. Everyone has the feeling they could have kept Windows 10 and just invested serious development work on Windows 12. There's no good reason to change the desktop paradigm and the only universal app I like is the Files App and only that because it has something still not implemented in Windows Explorer: tabbed browsing. Designing a coherent modern operating system means dumping thousands of lines of obsolete code and figuring out from the ground up how everything works together. That's why Windows 11 feels unfinished, like a perpetual beta. This is a minor status quo effort from Microsoft and its far from what the company is totally capable of doing. Maybe in a decade they'll get it right.

 

That's a huge group. A lot of PCs are actually partially supported. The only thing keeping them off the official upgrade list is their processor and this is purely artificial. My Surface Pro 3 has an incompatible processor but it has TPM 2.0 and secure boot and it runs Windows 11 with no issues.

One has the feeling Microsoft kept off most of its Surface line not because they can't run Windows 11 but purely to get people to buy new Surface products just launched.

Announcing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22463

 

Build 2243 failed to install twice for me with an error 0x800703ee. In a VM. This is a long way from something I want to install on a real PC.

 

I just checked for updates on my personal laptop and it is on Windows 10 on the Release Preview channel. It says Windows 11 is ready.
Not sure that I want to try it on my device, at least yet. I was a little surprised to have it offered already.

That is crazy. I guess because you are still logged into an insider account. I'd have to check mine when I get home. But I do not log into my insider account on my personal machine.

 

Could you be mistaking it as another updated preview prelease dev that's ready?

I'm not on any dev channels nor intended to be but am content to grab at it when Windows update turns it out to it's official (or adequate from their POV) public release server machines.

Could it be testers will get the first dibs though and that's why you see it?

 

I assume I am just one of the first to discover that they have released to the Release Preview ring. I have opted to stay on 10 so far. This is not uncommon the last 2 weeks before the public release.

I got it here too in the release preview channel and installed it. Everything went well. After the install was done, I checked the option to stop flighting when the next major release of windows came thru, and it indeed took me out of the release preview channel, so it appears that this is indeed the final release of 11, 12 days early. I think I will go with 11 now for a while and see how I like it. I have Macrium images of everything including 10, so I can always go back if I'm not satisfied with 11. Anyway, so far, so good.

 

That is good to know. When you opt-out of the release preview channel does it also remove the additional diagnostics and telemetry required for being a member of the insider program? I never checked it out in the past as I am mister clean install over here lol.

 

I'm downloading 22000.194 now, which is said to be the RTM version, since I now have a laptop that meets the requirements for Windows 11.

I made a new Macrium image yesterday when I was presented with this in case I wanted to give it a go but it was late enough in the day I didn't know if the update would finish before it was time to leave work and I certainly didn't want to hang around after hours waiting for it. I still don't know if I can get past the updated File Explorer as it look like the simplified interface will have to be relearned and some of the options are just gone. I see creating a new folder is now 2 clicks instead of a toolbar button. Things like this will make it a burden to use in small ways.

 

When you opt out I think it just leaves telemetry on full... the normal situation. I don't really know of any additional telemetry in the insider builds.... but once you're out, you are free to adjust the settings however you like.

I usually use Shutup10... so I was wondering if there will be a new Shutup 11 or if they will just keep Shutup10 and make it compatible with 11....

 

Yeah, my initial impression of 11 was that it made many things more annoying and more inconvenient... poor design basically. And it seems like they took away some of the power from the user to do even simple things.. like hide the wifi icon from the taskbar... now it's part of a group of 3 things and I see no way to hide any of them. Just little details that make 11 more annoying...

Otherwise, it seems ok. It took about an hour and a half to install and finish here... not too bad. I'm sure it's even faster on more powerful machines...

 

Gotcha I was just curious. I am waiting for the final release to do a clean install myself.

 

Thanks, that about the time frame I expect. If/when I do this I'll make a fresh image first because ultimately I expect I'll restore Windows 10 shortly afterwards.
