Ok, we've reached the point where they are stopping updates in the Dev channel it you don't meet the hardware requirements. My VM popped up an extra "checking your pc" box and then refused to continue.

That's a bummer. At least there was some weeks of advanced notice, though.

I felt kind of lousy when MS kicked me out of the Insiders without notice when I didn't have TPM 2.0 yet. Just another indication that there's no looking back when it comes to Windows 11. .

 

We knew it was coming but I was expecting it to be closer to the actual release. No great loss. I was just letting folks know.

 

Well I can say this about it. If 11 at all turns out to be a parade of time wasting after upgrading my new 10 box, they can take this to the bank. I wouldn't hesitate a second in installing beautiful Windows 8.1 onto the best hardware it ever didn't have in the past when released.

I recently noticed a flurry of jumpers over to Linux and if they gather enough dissatisfied Windows 11 newcomers who knows. No choice for me but to treat Windows 11 as a novelty ATM unless it shows some real promise of innovation and not the same old persistent user beta testing routine and of course that Telemetry thing is rubbed a lot of folks. Some have since jumped ship and others may follow suit. We will see.

The general expectation is that Windows 11 can show itself worthy of all the extra demands for the hardware requirements they want to implement just to run the thing.

 

I'd have already done it if there was a reasonable replacement for Outlook. I keep hoping someone will introduce me to something I was not aware of.

Trust me, this stuff is not fixable. The reason why I still haven't performed a full PC reset is because the stuff that is broken is minor, but it still annoys me. And it will take a couple of hours to reinstall and reconfigure all of my apps. To be more clear, certain icons on the tray won't respond on double click and the Settings app crashes when I want to change certain stuff. The Windows Store app won't launch at all. Plus when the laptop comes out of hibernation, svchost.exe will always use 12% of CPU time, this will last for 10 minutes. All of this stuff started after installing a couple of updates months ago.

Yes I guess I should look in to this. Do you have any recommendations?

No, Win 11 is not worth it, so far it only seems to annoy the hell out of people because of certain changes that M$ made for no good reason.

No it's still crap. I wish it worked a bit more like Rollback RX. Back in the days I used ERUNT on Win XP, it did save me a couple of times, by simply restoring the registry.

 

Short of using a fresh made backup image, in my experience even Registry Backup by Tweaking.Com OR RegBak x64 can prove a much safer and more reliable repair then System Restore. It's a daily routine on all my machines and have even added 2 more good registry backup apps =4. File issues can equally throw Registry Entries off track and make a machine unbootable. Have to agree that System Restore is a feature which could use a total overhaul.

 

A lot of hate for System Restore. It has saved me more than once from having to do a full disk image restore. Which would have been hours instead of minutes. Some software and I think even some drivers do interfere with it though.

 

The same here.

Which is why I minimize 3rd party apps.

How do you know that if you have tried System Restore or System Repair? Pretty much everything is fixable, with a few minor exceptions. Whenever I have issues with any of my computers, I do my best to troubleshoot and fix the issues myself, no matter how long that takes. I only restore from a backup or reinstall Windows, as an absolute last resort.

You have more patience than I have. I give it 5 minutes and then I restore an image. An image restore only takes 30 seconds.

 

Wow! What`s your image tool?

 

For restores I use TeraByte Unlimited Image for Linux. For backups, Image for Windows.

But, I keep the OS partition lean and mean by not having any personal data files. No Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Video or email. Also, it is a NVMe to NVMe drive restore. That is somewhat faster than SSD to SSD.

On a test basis, I can do a 4 second restore of a fresh Win10 system. A metadata image
restore. The restore of my main computer isn't a metadata restore. Just a standard restore.

 

I just tried a metadata restore on my main computer. It took 13 seconds. Windows 10 OS, about 18 months old.

 

Win11 thread. My Win11 OS is 4 weeks old and is up to date. A metadata restore done a few minutes ago took 6 seconds.

 

With some work I found I was able to take my VM and convert it to GPT, then UEFI, then encrypt it, then add a virtual TPM. Looks like the testing will continue.

 

That is how i do it also on my NVMe drive.

As far as i know Macrium with its RDR is faster then the imagers you mentioned so, why the speed? If it is the meta data restore tell me what that is. I am to lazy to google.

 

Cool and nice effort overcoming steps needed to make it work. Keep us updated how it goes. We are getting near and closing in on the release debut. I'm waiting til Oct to take a chance on it.

BTW does anyone know if already installed programs will be wiped with the Windows 11 upgrade or is the compatibility roughly the same.

 

If it's an upgrade it should keep everything. This VM was an upgrade from the Windows 10 Dev channel and nothing has been lost.
