DefenderUI

Seems like it will become a bit like OSArmor. And I have checked out DefenderUI 1.71 and I'm very impressed! It uses about 100MB RAM and virtually no CPU time and it seems to correctly enable/disable Win Defender settings. The GUI looks great but needs to be improved a bit when it comes to DPI settings. But this is definitely a keeper, very weird that M$ couldn't come up with tools like Win Firewall Control and DefenderUI.

As I been saying for many years it still appears Micro is quite satisfied in providing it's customers and user's with a BASIC framework for others to add creativity to enhance it's abilities as well as security.

That long crafted policy is reaped Micro a renown worldwide following and user base with the best benefit a nice fat billfold to last them and their descendants a lifetime in their lifetime too.

They need not do anything different and won't as we have seen for decades.

 

A perfect example of this is their Windows firewall with advanced security since Windows 7 (Vista?), where they jumped out of the gates fiercely competing with the competition, only to blow a tire because they won't provide wildcard support for path rules, no connection attempt alerts, nor provide a much easier and efficient user interface for the end user to create rules. It's nothing more than a half-baked, lazy effort probably due to lack of interest on MS' part, when they could have easily tailored it into a full fledged application firewall.

Thankfully there is a talented and ambitious developer in @alexandrud who developed and maintains his Windows Firewall Control utility to give this "incomplete" snap-in some teeth, although even he is limited by the limitations MS has has baked into its product.

 

Couldn't agree with you more. There's some vital improvements that they could have ushered into the framework (and finished) but chose to let it go the way of the wind for other's to fashion. And then comes along one of those famous updates to break that, or at least bork it enough where the developers have to sew up the loose ends again.

That's exactly why I always look at the Windows series as a 'framework', nothing more nothing less.

Awesome stuff! I'm very happy with DefenderUI so far. In fact, I might take another look at VoodooShield if it gets a new GUI similar to DUI.

Yes correct, and there's nothing wrong with that, unless it involves important OS features like AV and firewall. Both really needed a way better GUI and luckily WFC and DUI offer this, but M$ should have come up with this themselves with so many talented people working on Windows.

 

It will, as the reason that Dan developed DefenderUI is essentially to 'trial'/develop the new GUI for VoodooShield...and I believe that once DefenderUI is finished he will start work on the new VoodooShield GUI.

 

I've waited to post this question unless someone else addressed it. Dan, did you mean for the last three buttons in the notifications section to be offset from the buttons above? None the less, this is a fantastic project!

Yes, I read about it. I've stopped using EXE Radar, so that's another reason why I may take another look at VS, especially if it gets a cool new GUI.

Same here. EXE Radar ran it's course well.

VoodooShield with a sleek more inviting GUI is already of great interest and expectation after seeing and experiencing firsthand the DefenderUI proggy.

i'm using defender to avoid third-party av's and you're expecting me to use a third-party app to control defender? yeah, right.

 

Isn’t the point of that this apps to actually improve defender?
