Im running Defender, Wisevector, and Simplewall and definitely noticed an improvement in internet and overall performance after adding exceptions in Windows Defender for StopX and Simplewall.

This is just a reminder as I think there are probably lots like me who are prone to overlook or forget to take that step... goes for other AVs too of course but I really noticed an improvement in this case.

    Settings/Update and security/Windows Security/Virus and Threat Protection/Manage Settings/Add or Remove Exclusions

Edit: I didnt do any benchmarking... just based on my perception

Yes. Very useful good reminder because due to the way MD zeroes in on programs and files in it's background -Realtime Protection- I also have found that necessary.

Now on Windows 8.1 which where I run a series of those systems with the antiquity version of MD as WD, you cannot even make use of the phenomenal Custom Refresh rollback WIM feature unless first not excluding but in Windows 8.1 it's necessary to temporarily disable WD in order for it to write a full complete backup WIM. Only for those who still use 8 of course like me. It's no biggie.
