Unless economically forced. I can't imagine keeping an active, have ton of older phones. phone for more than 3 years. Not an early adopter but batteries degrade.
One would think the devastating floods experienced in Germany and Belgium earlier this year would provide the impetus to push this thru. According to the article, extending a phone's life by just one year is the rough equivalent to removing the carbon emissions of 2 million vehicles on the road. Issues like these shouldn't be running out of steam. Now is the time.
So they should, at least for the mid to high end devices. It's a crime to throw away perfectly capable devices just because the OS doesn't support newer apps anymore!
That's not much of an issue for Android devices, as apps don't require recent versions of Android. For example, Chrome only needs Android 5, which was released in 2014 and Facebook, Android 6 from 2015.
Hi Roger, the Covid-19 QR-code Check-in App for Victoria, Service Victoria, requires Android 6 and Ios 11 minimum. My wife's much beloved Iphone 5 was made obsoleted!
Android 6 was release in late 2015, so it's nearly 6 years old. While I certainly agree with you that support for older operating systems too would be good, on the other hand, I don't think 6 years of apps supporting an operating system is too bad.
