This news does not come as a "new nasty suprise" to me. I am not surprised at all. I didn't expect anything else from Google.

    Vivaldi & Chromium FTW.

Personally, I find it difficult to get too worked up about this. The privacy/tracking aspect can definitely be improved upon, but I am not motivated to suddenly delete Chrome because of anything put forth in this article. Just my opinion.

Pretty much stopped using Chrome when I discovered that Brave offered me Chrome’s advantage without any disadvantage to me.

So this kind of articles only help to reinforce my change of browser.

I don't think Chrome's that far behind Firefox and Safari in privacy and tracking. But it's been known for quite a while that it has lost its lead. Safari has surprised me though, I use it a lot.

Regarding turning off cross-site tracking in Chrome, I am not convinced that enabling the "do not track" setting is actually effective. Better to utilize privacy tools such as Decentraleyes, Privacy Possum, Adguard, etc. And I believe that by not logging into a Google account, I am preventing a great deal of the tracking. Just my opinion.

Edit in: In a somewhat dated article (2019), the ineffectiveness of Do Not Track requests is discussed... The "Do Not Track" Setting Doesn't Stop You from Being Tracked

Good points. I am also drawn to Chrome's security. Everytime there is a browser update, I look at the security fixes. To me, that is a huge plus in using Chrome. It could even be said that the privacy issues are the price one pays for the security enhancements. Just my opinion.

I don't honestly believe there's much between the main popular browsers today, with certain privacy/security extensions added of course. Apple's 'walled garden' approach to Safari seems to be paying off. It's just a pity there aren't that many extensions available for it.

You're probably right. Ultimately, when we drill down, we find ourselves in fine-toothed comb territory.

From time to time I encounter a website that doesn't work correctly unless I disable Decentraleyes. That tells me it is working. :D

Well, Total Cookie Protection (available with ETP in Strict Mode) is something not offered in other browsers. It's an enhancement of the former First-Party Isolation and is an excellent protection against cross-site tracking, even more so in combination with State Partitioning which goes further than what, e.g., Brave is doing.

And if it comes to security I think that now with Fission enabled Firefox is on par with Chrome.

Thanks for the info, very interesting. According to the browseraudit.com results I got Firefox isn't just on par with Chrome, but slightly ahead of it. On my Mac computers Safari is showing the best anti-tracking and overall security by a small margin with Firefox a close second. On Ubuntu, Firefox is just ahead of Chrome and Vivaldi.

This is why I dropped it. It was breaking sites and it took a while to figure out it was this and not the site. Another instance where I like the idea of this tool but it's more trouble than it's worth.

I'll have to keep an eye on Decentraleyes. :doubt:

Support seems to have ended in Nov 2020.

After about 2½ years with it, replaced with LocalCND in Firefox in April.

A significant fork/upgrade, vastly improved, highly configurable, well supported.

    Cheers
