Windows 10 also works without being activated. It has some very minor limitations, but can be used forever without being activated, unlike previous versions of Windows. At the moment, you can activate Windows 11, with a Windows 7, 8, or Windows 10 product key.

After 20 years plus they are focusing on Windows dressing.

Personally it would IMHO be a logical improvement if the copy from one txt to another text file had the option of not always replacing but AMENDING text files by adding new data without replacing in entirety.

As this goes on and the changes seem extremely minor, I am expecting to right click (lack of) options on the taskbar aren't going to change. That and the fact that I can only upgrade one of my devices to this may just make it a deal breaker. At least in the short term.

does it keep licences of files (bought program) or you have to re-install a bunch of stuff?

Well, in my case, I cleanly installed a bootleg ISO from a site that had shielded itself from Microsoft's DMCA. So, of course every third party software had to be re-installed and the licenses re-activated. All subsequent cumulative updates preserved my software and their respective licenses.

I believe (pls someone correct this if mistaken) that if you follow the legitimate upgrade path via Insiders, that your software/licenses will be preserved. To leave the Insiders or switch to another channel (edit: ie downgrade from DEV to Release), you have to clean-install Windows.

So far, I haven't had any nasty surprises with 11 (yet). It's been an overall pleasant experience but I'm stuck in the DEV channel like many others.

All the software in my computers kept their licenses when updated from 10 to 11. It doesn't mean there aren't exceptions out there.

if you unpack the iso, and run setup.exe it will give you 3 options, the first one is to keep modifications and installs, the second only the files, the the third nothing (full format)

but OS must be same language as iso file, and I think there are only English isos for now

I've been updating a VM in the Fast Ring (now Dev Channel) and have never had an issue with any installed software.

thanks, I am wondering what AV to use since windows defender especially in the 11 pro version should be a though opponent (what it uses to communicate, svchost?)

For now I don't want to buy software and need to use free av (considering bitdefender), later I transfer license from other (old) laptop

theoretically I should use WD for 11, since :
"It has been posted many timed that you should not use 3rd party anti virus programs with Insider builds as the have not been updated to work with the Preview builds."

A lot of them work fine. I installed ESET in my VM for a test and it seemed ok. Unlike Defender which seems to not be running every time I boot. If it works fine but for me it has never started by itself in Windows 11.

Is W11 going to be another Vista, W8 nightmare? I starting to think it might as I see little differences between 10 and 11 and it seems like it was just a waste of resources for very little gain.

    That's what I was thinking.
My personal opinion is there is not a lot to love about it.
It's like taking one step forward and three steps back.

I agree. There is nothing I'm excited about. It seems to me that they will release it just to try to persuade users to buy new hardware.

Has anyone noticed Win11 boots (loads) slowly. Clean installs from an ISO.

    I have a multi-boot with several Win 10 and...

Win11 installed in an offline account
Win11 installed in a Microsoft account

From the boot manager, both Win11 OS load in 40 seconds. All Win10 load in 15 seconds.

Same Brian, with Win 11 and MS account, only Firefox installed - but I hadn't noticed it was slower ...

But my Win 10s all go through Macrium Boot Menu as well so difficult to tell.

Edit: Win 11 about 10 secs till 'sound', less than 15 secs to sign-in screen. (ThinkBook i7-10510U CPU, 16GB RAM).

That coupled with the very limited ability to upgrade existing hardware. I have 3 personal devices and only one of them is upgradable. At work nothing is upgradable but the boss' laptop. None of this will get replaced for the sake of running Windows 11.

Surprising that I did a clean install from an iso and now tiles are back in the start menu, they were not there before.
