HOT DOG!!! Finally one of my long reliable tools, albeit similar is made @mood's list in these forums. A good reg explorer is a magnificent registry program. And another one that if not for it, I would have gave up computers entirely long time ago. RegCrawler! Will drill right to the exact key-value and allow to view and delete old sticky keys that even cleaners can't or won't risk.

    Thanks @mood - :thumb:

Most user's don't realize when things go wrong with windows due to either a windows file mishap or software mess up (not always malware) that keeping daily registry backups can restore your systems right back on track in flash! I personally use Tweaking.Com's RegistryBackup as well as RegBak and also MiTec's Registry Viewer that also backups your registry nicely.

Windows Registry is hardcode tied to the rest of a windows system. When things go wrong most never consider a simple registry restore is quick, painless, and vital for those times it's a registry issue.

    lol, ymmd.

And a registry backup is futile, it will never fit the current situation after recovering (which ofc need a windows restart). either all (windows in total) or nothing.

some articles (here: bleeping) are really pain and BS.

That figures. I can attest unequivocally without bias or fan boy ambition registry backups have rescued systems from even having to resort to Image Backups.

Futile? Hardly-IF your referring to registry backups this program IS NOT the ONE you want for that. Just to be clear.

Only reason I even bother with it at all. And registry backups have resumed normal operations so many times for me that I could never count them all. Sometimes needing to boot to Linux Mint to OVERWRITE the files- {You have to know how and what) It can be simple just to plop a recent saved good backup image and nothing wrong with that whatsoever. Now I stress of particular on Windows 8. I certainly would not and cannot exact a same result or opinion about 7 or 10 since both of those are green systems. Windows 7 I never ever once even messed with, but 10 could or could not benefit. Not tested mine yet.

The biggest BS a user in distress will ever discover is all the sites that claim "you need do a clean windows install". Nope, not at all even if only armed with Registry Backups even without a ready saved backup image. Of course there are times user's fudged system would have to resort to that and start all over again. Microsoft started that crap long time ago on their own website and many sites took that as truth-which couldn't be further from it. They love wasting user's valuable time when a system borks and they have no other answer to offer.

Case-In-Point. DISM for one in tandem with SFC/ChkDsk (not to mention third party experts programs like tweaking.com) :isay:

Unrelated but I tried another tool there and it promptly for my efforts returned a nice BSOD. No Damage but I guess System Explorer v0.91 tool clashed with the current driver filter hierarchy. Gonna test their KernelDriverMonitor next. If no joy I tried.

Dang good looking tool. Will try on 10

@mood- Please note: Windows 8 user's (maybe 7) cannot run Registry Explorer without the 'missing' vcruntime140_1.dll -
Easily found here at DLL-FILES.COM -
    https://www.dll-files.com/download/3b22b2ec303b0721827dd768c87df6ed/vcruntime140_1.dll.html?c=ckREcTFxUHlKMGh6MDFxRDU1SXV1QT09

    Then it works Beautifully!
If you get a 'Permissions Denied' on some registry protected keys and are savvy just run it with SYSTEM privileges.
EDIT: Please don't be overzealous like me. Run As Administrator-

@mood for the WIN on this find :thumb:

    Process Monitor X v2
    - on same github projects works great too- Very Nice Layout with details. Could been the other uses an unsigned driver why I got hit with a BSOD with System Explorer file.

Confirmed: By Microsoft itself- Other TOOLS on that page that use drivers are UNSIGNED DRIVERS-
(MS Prompt Instead of another BSOD)
Guess they figured I been blue screened enough from his tools with Unsigned Drivers.

thats a special x64 dilemma when vcredist 2015-2019 is not installed. on x86 system that file do not exist.
and its not recommended to download it elsewhere, it has to fit a present vcruntime140.dll with the same version number.
there exist a lot of questions where vcruntime140_1.dll is missing after uninstalling this or that software. known program to cause this issue are any kind of Office software, or Mozillas VPN software. Microsoft has no clue whats going wrong, but it is tied to that combined vcredist installation. Thats also reason why Edge (chromium based) includes always those 2 files.

for the reg backup - it was developed while windows 9x was current, maybe helpful on xp, but not later. starting with a lot of internal changes in windows 7 and its dependencies between registry and files. it was proven that system restore on windows 10 led to an inoperable windows.
    https://www.extremetech.com/computi...m-restore-after-windows-update-breaks-windows
and thats a matter of registry and files, not only the catalog.
even MS is currently not able to fix this issue, so why it should work on other windows?

a registry backup is useful when only that parts where recovered which may wrong, missing or destroyed. in case of windows settings it could go really worse. even a live backup (running on windows) can go wrong, VSS used or not.

thats all about i cited in #3 - it not designed for every user only for those who have experience or those who wants to try out but are able to create a backup before. this is not about you or me.

The website states as much. DLL FILES.COM is been reputable in my experience. Not often but whenever needing a DLL they always have/had the correct version or versions. Glad they are not careless like many who will flood you with who knows what making your search endless, but not them. Of course most freelance programs generously also provide the files needed to run their creations, but not all of them like in this instance.

As a power user am aware of that. It doesn't necessarily need be a serious issue like windows not loading the GUI which prompts more decisive decisions on how to go about it. I have rescued many times even these past months on Windows 8 and 8.1 systems where either a corrupted file like USER.DAT or UserClass.DAT went haywire and even then also overwrite the Config folder of files (or else things really go hairy) Done both manual and automatic with RegBak + RegistryBackUp from Tweaking and was right back functioning as expected.

Windows in any series IS NOT nowhere near a perfect operating system and it certainly doesn't have to take a malware or buggy program for one to malfunction or something change that you yourself didn't knowingly change.

Windows DOES TRY to self-correct (and they can do much better with some effort to that end) and they do have native tools for that purpose but also keep them hidden for the most part unless you done your homework what's available to pull a malfunctioning system out it's tailspin.

I agree most user's BLINDLY expect the thing to perform as expected but even Windows own Updates can cause end user's problems that waste time and effort fishing thru every possible cause. HUGE reason most in this forum are smart enough to always make regular backup images and that Industry alone is the biggest assist to Microsoft's O/S series IMHO. Who had the time to reinstall every time something goes wrong and lose their critical work files in the progress.

One final note: Tweaking.com RegBackUp and others make use of Windows own VSS shadow copy and works like a charm. The registry is inevitably tied into the rest of the system tightly controlled. I did read some years ago Windows Developers were searching for a way to code Windows again and completely remove the registry entirely which is caused them their own share of support issues.

I've found this one to be quite handy, stable, corporate on my Win10 & 7 systems.

I have that one too. But it is incapable of overcoming LOCKED Permissions on Hidden/Inaccessible Keys even as Administrator that by design are ruled by SYSTEM Token.

Guess one could run it AS SYSTEM or TRUSTED INSTALLER but you better know what your doing and how to reset the TOKEN back to Default. The Registry is a tricky intricate part of our Windows Computer.

It still works on windows 8. O&O Software is known to create hidden entries.
