Avast (Avast + AVG) + Norton (Norton + Avira)

How long until the other AVs merge

Perhaps they think it's the only way to compete against MS Defender? Now that I think about it, I wonder why they never filed a complaint against M$. Isn't this basically the same as when they started to bundle IE with Windows? I recently watched Valley Of The Boom again, a pretty good TV serie about Netscape vs M$ and the dotcom bubble.

Hmmm, that's intriguing, right? An acquisition like that would include more than antivirus technology. PC optimization/"tune-ups", cleaners and hardware information would be included. Microsoft started including GPU temperature monitoring in Task Manager recently. That "small" step had me ditching MSI Afterburner after several years of use. Things like that don't escape the notice of the corporate big ones as it risks losing customers.

Guess we'll find out sometime in August or thereabouts how this pans out.

We might see something similar in future if big AV companies lose too much users.

The profits are in commercial security software. Always has been. Always will be. This is why concerns like Eset, Kaspersky, McAfee, and even TrendMicro are doing well financially. These orgs. can offer competitively priced consumer versions because they are just "rebagged" versions of their commercial endpoint products. Also, costs associated with the consumer versions can be offset from profits from commercial software sales.

Rest assured that when the costs associated with these consumer versions become excessive, they also will be dropped from the concerns product offerings. Also, Microsoft is trying their damnedest to make this happen by constant OS modifications in regards to security protections.

Once MS has the consumer market exclusively using WD, it can embedded whatever telemetry and monitoring into it and increase their bottom line.

Norton (Pac-Man) gobbles up another software company. Gobble, Gobble, Gobble. Nothing positive I see with this just more email spam about their product sent to customers like Norton has been doing to me for the last several years. :(

Things have changed a lot since 2007.
To survive, Anti-Malware vendors will be forced to merged.

The problem is that they might also start to lose lots of corporate users because Win Def works together with MS Defender ATP. In a way you could argue that M$ is using WD as a vehicle to promote MS Defender ATP to corporations.

Just to mention, AVG and CCleaner belong to Avast.

(clamwin seems to be located in australia)

at least antivirus is still overrated, microsoft is grabbing through other channels you join yourself for free, dont moan about defender ;)

Some Chinese developers in the field of protection security have fashioned very useful programs. EQSysSecure Hips was beautiful example one. It would be all the rave had it went compatible to 64Bits but stopped.

WiseVector is another current that is very much a useful product and trying hard.

Can we stick to the thread subject..The possible merger of Avast with NortonLifelock and not politics.

    Thank you.

With all these mergers, I want to switch to an AV that NO other company wants -- merger-proof, in other words. Any suggestions? :)

But seriously... who needs a signature-based AV nowadays? Isn't a whitelist-based AV plus Macrium Reflect (or similar) enough?
