Windows 11 early review - Shiny, inefficient, confusing

The future beckons. Or does it? Here's something to spice up your Friday, a long, detailed review of the Dev build of Windows 11, covering installation and setup in a triple-boot scenario on a laptop with AMD Ryzen processor and Vega graphics, additional testing in a virtual machine on a laptop with Intel 8th gen processor, including in-vivo upgrade results, user settings preservation, privacy and security, new taskbar, new system menu, new settings and numerous associated ergonomic problems, personalization, default apps, performance, responsiveness, updates estimates, various bugs and problems like missing battery time indicator or missing color accent for certain applications, other observations, overall value, and more. Have fun.

Yes, it was easy but I had to search a bit more in-depth to get the solution, which was not intuitive for my ASUS board. One only needed to deal with the "PK" keys in UEFI and leave the others alone, it seems. Thankfully, it worked out and I was able to install the bootleg ISO. Windows 11 has been overall nice so far, have to admit. :)

I'm not on the dev channel (and using a LOCAL account) and I used an ISO built from W10.21H2 with a W11 INSTALL.* and the updates are working perfectly (it's currently downloading KB5004745 which is the .65 update).

    Edit: Update went just fine...

indeed. but i believe there's much more to come and i'm afraid they just won't leave well enough alone.

Possibly but I think it's about done. I am going to assume they have kept this pretty quiet because of the hardware requirements. I'm not expecting huge changes from the current form. Though I have been wrong before. :argh:

I'm pretty sure it won't take that long to sort it out.

Well, let's hope so. There are already quite a few issues at the OS GH, and workarounds, so that's an encouraging sign.

So are you saying that Open Shell doesn't work on Win 11? And I haven't read your review yet, but is it true that you managed to install Win 11 on your Lenovo IdeaPad 3 laptop, without any workarounds? Not that I'm planning to install Win 11 anytime soon, but as you may already know I've got the same laptop, but mine is based on Intel not AMD, but I don't know if this matters.

Installed on AMD Ryzen 5/ AMD security processor enabled in BIOS. No other tweaks or anything.
Open-Shell works but only via super key, not by clicking on the menu button - that needs a workaround.

    Your laptop should be fine.

The pre-checks for installation seem to discard any Intel processor older than Gen8 (see W11 supported processors HERE. Dev channel users have been having some leeway with that... but not too old). The final release may be much less forgiving (W11 really wants that special virtualization hardware that appeared in Gen8 processors and beyond... TPM is a different issue all together).

The Lenovo Ideapad 3 with its Gen10 processor looks just fine...

Even .65 is still a bit quirky. Did a simple DEFENDER update this morning... it downloaded then installed and when finished said "Status Unknown" and sat there, forever. I killed and restarted Windows Update, ran the update and it said all was well and that System was "Up to date." Who knew...
