EASTER, yes I do use VLC (both in my Win7 PC and Android phone), and I love it!

Found this article awhile back regarding its hidden features: https://lifehacker.com/the-best-hidden-features-of-vlc-1654434241

Haven't tried this on my Win10 laptop, but maybe you can in your new setup: https://www.vlchelp.com/how-to-make-vlc-the-default-media-player-in-windows-10/

I really appreciate your reply. I always for a long time enjoyed VLC then somehow got diverted to MPC-HC & BC. HC is my preferred choice due to the Playlist feature which can be easily docked for selecting then removed so more video screen can show.

Recently downloaded your link to a newest VLC but haven't tried it yet. A star trek fanatic, it is a favorite to find a player that is feature-rich and stable with no memory leaking.

To be perfectly honest, i brushed off VLC for MPC-HC for quite some time. Reason being that allowing it to loop thru my sci fi files while quite nice, by morning i would find my PC 8.1 that is, virtually as molasses.

These newer versions seem to be much more responsive on the surface. I've yet to run it all night as is the practice but certaintly hope it's better from that aspect. Mind you the thing doesn't have a lot to draw on with my 8.1 but im sure that on Windows 10 there wouldnt be such that issue.

My 5.1 speakers work fine with VLC, and if I set the configuration to 4.0 it works as well.

if you will find a working solution for 2 front and 2 back speakers, please let me know. 2.2.8 is not lived security, thats why i have also latest v3 installed. i remember it may be tricky but i did not expected that it seems impossible for vlc.
(reason for 2+2 is that front works here, and back in my living room).

I have a Xonar sound card with analog 3.5 mm output. In VLC Audio menu I have audio device set to default and stereo mode to original. In the preferences -> audio -> output, output module is on automatic, HDMI/SPDIF passthrough is disabled, device is default.
In Windows 10 sound settings, output device is Speakers(Asus Xonar device). And in the Xonar Audio Center software, Audio channel is set to 6 channels and Analog out set to 5.1 speakers.

(Btw, do you have multichannel content or is it just stereo content? If it is stereo, maybe you need to turn some kind of upmixing on.)

Videoes here are stereo, music also, winamp (nextgen) can use matrix-mixer, windows is able to deliver sound to front+back, WMP only play on front (that also happend with win81).
i had terratec aureon 5.1 working in win7/win81 with (experimental) vista drivers, x86.

my other machine has a "Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium", drivers for the whole hardware (which includes a descent panel) worked up to win7, not win8 or later. but that is not connected to the living room, nor is that machine running most of all times like this one with a huge collection.

the issue started with vlc v3, it uses same settings as v2, and vice versa. v2 has front+back, v3 not. wmp same, no back speaker, although its set as quad and play sound within he speaker settings. thats why i dont use wmp for years and got vlc. winamp (also aimp*) can do on 2+2, so the channels are available.
*aimp still has a buggy remote control plugin, 3rd-party.

i found out that "RtkNGUI64.exe" is not running. (Realtek HD Audio Manager)

driver is 2.82 from RT, original. i had the one from MS itself before which was poor on settings.

potplayer x64, found it 2-0-2 (4.0) - and playing quad. maybe i really should switch the player after years.

edit: target approached, vlc is history here.
