Very worrying that Google can't filter out these malicious ads! I think many people might fall for this trick and as we all know, AV's can always fail to detect zero day malware. That's why some extra protection is always a good idea, think of anti-loggers and anti-ransomware.
Note that users had to download open the files to get infected. They did not get infected just from visiting the websites. If they had downloaded the files from the publisher's websites, or trustworthy download sites, they would have got the original installers and not malware. So for experienced users, who exercise some caution, situations like this should not be a problem.
Yes correct, nowadays most people don't get infected via exploits anymore because browsers are a lot more safe. But let's face it, it's quite easy to get tricked into downloading malware, and 90% of all users aren't that tech savy.
