Yes correct, I also noticed this. But I was talking about updates in general, both security and functionality updates for the Windows OS are a huge risk to system stability and may introduce all kinds of problems. But so far I haven't noticed Win Defender acting strange after signature and engine updates.

That's what I do too. I download the updates from Windows Catalog, then apply them on Saturday so I can roll back any potential issues before the work week begins. So far, I haven't had any significant problems with Windows 10 updates, though Windows 7 was a different story.

ATP is business endpoint security, nothing to buy for personal use. It's just a console like any other endpoint security software such as Kaspersky or Eset Remote Administrator Server to manage them over the net. I think you don't really need this as a private person ;)
And ofc you need a compatible linux/osx client which means "microsoft". Do you want or need MS software on your private Mac or -ix machine? ;) (ESET has for the most OS)

It's basically only for the enterprise and works on most popular OSes like Windows, Linux and macOS. Basically, Windows Defender and Win Defender ATP work together on corporate networks. On consumer PC's you don't need it.

just simple, most networks and attached machines are controlled by a server ;) And ATP only run on Windows machines, either client or servers.

Dont buy laptops below 16gb ram. U're setting urself up to run out of ram... A few hundred mb is nothing. Unless u have little ram...

Well, I would have already been happy with 12GB. I often have at least 50 tabs open in Vivaldi causing it to use almost 4GB. I can always close or hibernate tabs of course, so it's not a big deal, but sometimes it's a bit annoying that you have to pay attention to this. I bought a Lenovo IdeaPad 3 with 8GB RAM months ago, but I see that they currently offer more powerful Lenovo IdeaPad 5 laptops with double the RAM for the same price, bit of a bummer.

I think u can add ram manually, if there is space. Or exchange ur 4gb modules for 8. Or 8 for 16 if it's single. Or 8 for 2*8. Or if it's single 8 add one 4, tho idk if dual channel will work properly then.

Yes correct, I will look into this, perhaps I will try to upgrade it to 12 or 16GB, I'm not sure how diffucult this is, I'm not real handy LOL. But anyway, I still wonder if Win Defender is more resource hungry than third party AV's.

For some reason I have the rule in my head to stick with ram amounts like: 4,8,16,32,64... (I think for dual channel or so).
I would try to avoid 12 GB if possible and go with 16.

8GB should be more than enough RAM. If you were to have twice that many tabs open, you might need 16GB.

Well, I have just checked out the specs from my 14 inch Lenovo IdeaPad 3 laptop and to my surprise I can only upgrade to 12GB but in order to this I will have to replace the 4GB module, this is a stupid design.

Yes but what if you want to open another app while you still have 1GB RAM left? But you're right, it's not a big deal since I mostly browse the web, however Windows 10 is more resource heavy than Win 8. I noticed that all of the svchost.exe processes and Win Defender use at least 1GB RAM.

    Not the case for me

Then again I have WD disabled + optimized pc so

If I close literally everything, my ram usage drops below 3GB.

Agreed. 8 is enough for most things unless you are doing heavy gaming or running virtual machines. That said if buying something new and the RAM is not upgradeable get all you can afford.

My work laptop has 8gb of ram, and handles things fine. I feel the whole ">=16gb of ram or bust" thing is over done. Sure it is better, but if you are not gaming or using heavy apps, 8gb works fine.

If you open Task Manager and memory usage is at 74% or below than you are not running low on RAM. If it is regularly at over 74%, then more RAM would help.

The problem with Defender Control is that MD will disactivate it after a while. I'm gong to see if I can exclude it...
