From the Playstore, install Firefox browser and Avast mobile security.

Then, allow Firefox to install software from external sources. You can enable this in settings > security > more settings > install apps from external sources. Allow Firefox.
Use Firefox, search for F-droid download and download F-Droid apk. Then, install F-Droid.

Similar to Google Play, F-Droid app is a database of software, except all F-Droid apps are open source, ad-free. Just like Google Play, you can update all apps downloaded within F-Droid app itself. Except you don't need to login to an account, unlike Google Play where you need to login to Google account. Therefore, it gives you better privacy.

Use the F-Droid search and install:
    - Privacy browser.
    - DuckDuckGo browser for search engine and browser.
    - LibreAv antivirus.
    - VLC player.
    - Skytube for Youtube.
    - File manager.

Enable Global Privacy Control in DuckDuckGo browser. Take the tour and use DuckDuckGo browser to browse a few websites and you will be prompted to use DuckDuckGo search bar as widget. Tap Use Widget and install the widget on the home screen of your phone.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Disable all Google apps.
    1. Open the Google Play Store app
    2. Tap Menu > My apps & games.
    3. Tap on the app or game.
    4. Tap Uninstall.
Disable Google Play. Go to settings > search for apps > select Google Play and disable.

Remove Google account from your phone.
    1. Open your phone's Settings app.
    2. Tap Accounts. If you don't see "Accounts," tap Users & accounts.
    3. Tap the account you want to remove Remove account.
    4. If this is the only Google Account on the phone, you'll need to enter your phone's pattern, PIN, or password for security.
Once you remove the Google account and their apps, you can assure that Google cannot track you, even when using Android.

Ditto. They seem to work well together without bloat.

This is what I'm doing right now. I installed it earlier today and I like it so far. The thing is that I was also looking for an easy-to-use ad-blocker for Android that is compatible with Mullvad VPN for Android (one that does not work on a VPN basis). I found AdGuard Content Blocker, which is not as comprehensive as AdGuard for Android, but it seems to do a good job.

    https://adguard.com/en/adguard-content-blocker/overview.html

AdGuard Content Blocker only blocks ads in Yandex and Samsung browsers, but it's good enough for my needs.

mind you, on android 9 and above, you can set your dns servers to ag dns to block ads at dns level for free.

Thanks for the useful info, @imdb. Setting dns servers to ag would have been my next step if I hadn't found an ad blocker that is compatible with my VPN.

Quick question: If I use I VPN, is it recommended to change your DNS as well, for example if you don't trust your ISP? Or is this overkill? Just curious.

you wouldn't want to do that. always stick with your vpn service provider's dns servers.

And I presume this is also true for Windows, not just for Android, isn't it?

Just uninstalled Securion OnAV after it allowed two more viruses to install on my benighted UMX Android phone. (It caught a total of 3/5, while Play Protect caught 0/5). I replaced it with Avira Free 7.5, which detected and removed one suspicious app. Observing it for battery drain, hoping it won't be too much.

Uninstalled Norton and replaced it with Kaspersky which is included with my license. BlackFog Privacy still working fine.

    Yep, indeed I did. :)

I love it! Far quieter than my previous AV on Windows. It just works away in the background without bugging you about this and that.

With Firefox+UBO, I never see any popups about notifications on Android.
Sampei, biometric unlock actually lowers your security, btw.
