I have two computers in the release preview channel. One has News & Interests, the other doesn't. The only difference between them, besides hardware is that one uses Windows 10 Pro and the other uses Home.

Same here, one Pro, one Home.
But News & Interests popped up on both today after reboot.

Have set to 'icon only' to check it out, but will probably turn it off - it's really just a ploy to get one to use Edge.

Yep, 'News and Interest' is on both of my machines this morning. I've left it enabled for now.

Why would you want to use a 3rd party tool when you can just deactivate it yourself in 2 clicks?

you have a point. I had that guide up before it was actually released and didn't know it was something that can be easily disabled, hence why it is listed in my Tweaks Guide

We don't seem to be having any problems but I am not surprised there are issues. Outlook seems to still be broken in all the ways it has been broken for 14 years.

Good for you. :thumb: It's not yet clear what is affected, but here is a tweet confirming it from MS: https://twitter.com/i/web/status/1392208966231355392

I have never had any problems with Outlook, but I only use it in a corporate environment. It would never occur to me to use Outlook at home.

I have five laptops wit Office 365 Home and they all have problems with Outlook, however I can confirm that this displaying blank email thing happened on booting outlook today, BEFORE I actually updated Office 365 and before I installed Windows Updates. I was hoping the updates would fix Outlook, but sadly it didn't. Have updated three other laptops but not the fourth. Issue is present on all five, so it actually might not be the latest update, just Outlook is borked today. Emails will display on the Windows 10 Mail app, Thunderbird and my outlook for android OK though. It's just desktop outlook that's borked.

EDIT: A workaround mentioned on the twitter thread linked to in the above reddit link:

    "C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ClickToRun\officec2rclient.exe" /update user updatetoversion=16.0.13901.20462

Run via CMD as Admin, just worked for me - about 2 minutes.

Tried this myself on one affected laptop and outlook behaves normally after the installer downgraded to this version. This is actually two versions behind the latest, so that explains why the laptops I did not update this morning also have the issue (they are only 1 behind).

    2021 April 29 Version 2104 (Build 13929.20296)
    2021 April 23 Version 2103 (Build 13901.20462)

EDIT: All fixed, including on my machines that had already received the update today and I hadn't applied the downgrade to.

One of my computers now has the Windows 10 Taskbar widget.
I disabled it. It takes up too much Taskbar space.
I know you can change it to icon, but I doubt if I would use it.

I take it back and forth on a laptop. Ongoing for years are crashes, freezes, and when you empty the trash folder on an IMAP account, one of the deleted emails comes back until you empty it again. Another odd thing I have noticed is that if i start a new email it will auto capitalize the first word in the body of the email unless i have pasted an attachment first, then it does not. Just weird little things that have been ongoing for years. Unfortunately there is nothing that directly competees with it.

No issues to report of so far. We shall see how it goes as time goes by. No Office or Outlook issues as far as I can tell. I also do not have the News and Weather taskbar stuff. Not sure why but does not really bother me.

Installed KB5003173 last night from Windows Catalog on 20H2, took 16 min. on an SSD. I tested the sound with two music players, no problems observed. No .NET update was offered on manual checking, but the MSRT downloaded and ran.

So I did some research, and...

These are the new .NET updates for this month:
    https://devblogs.microsoft.com/dotnet/net-may-2021/
    https://github.com/dotnet/announcements/issues/186

    Going by this https://devblogs.microsoft.com/dotnet/introducing-net-5/
    and this https://devblogs.microsoft.com/dotnet/net-core-is-the-future-of-net/

we can determine a few things:

.NET Framework 4.8 will be the last major version of .NET Framework. If you have existing .NET Framework applications that you are maintaining, there is no need to move these applications to .NET Core. We will continue to both service and support .NET Framework, which includes bug–, reliability– and security fixes. It will continue to ship with Windows (much of Windows depends on .NET Framework) and we will continue to improve the tooling support for .NET in Visual Studio (Visual Studio is written on .NET Framework).

New applications should be built on .NET Core. .NET Core is where future investments in .NET will happen. Existing applications are safe to remain on .NET Framework which will be supported. Existing applications that want to take advantage of the new features in .NET should consider moving to .NET Core. As we plan into the future, we will be bringing in even more capabilities to the platform. You can read about our plans here.

What this means is, .net framework will be slowly moved out by the new .net 5.0. Ofc it will still be installed for compatibility, but .net framework is different than .net 5.0.

And what exactly is .net 5.0? Well, it's a continuation of .net core.

Downloads and more explanation about .net 5.0 here:
    https://dotnet.microsoft.com/download/dotnet/5.0
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/-net-5-0-update-0729e4d8-8bd7-4e01-8e68-7e4e6e12e3df

Do I have .net installed (not .net framework)? Open cmd (or powershell?), type dotnet --list-sdks and dotnet --list-runtimes
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/do...o-detect-installed-versions?pivots=os-windows
    if you get
    upload_2021-5-16_14-47-24.png
then you do not have .NET installed (different than .net framework, again). Or it's not added to the environment paths/variables (google this)

    Some more info:

Newest .net framework 4.8 update here
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...ver-21h1-958fff0c-783b-27b3-8a93-226f7798225a
https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=4601554 (for most people, this will be "2021-05 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 10 Version 20H2 for x64 (KB4601554)"). If the download is not starting, right click the link, copy link address, paste in new tab. For me, it got installed with the cumulative update

    upload_2021-5-16_14-41-20.png

More info about the different .nets:
    https://dotnet.microsoft.com/download
    https://stackoverflow.com/questions/63445216/how-can-i-determine-if-the-net-5-runtime-is-installed

Do we need both .net framework and .net? Yes, they are for different applications:
    1. If your app is compiled against .NET 5, and the computer you're trying to run on does not have .NET 5 installed, then your app simply won't launch (think of it like trying to run an application compiled for .NET Framework 4.8 on a computer which only has .NET Framework 3.5 installed)*
Right now .net apps are rare, so .net framework tends to be sufficient for the average person. But soon as more and more .net apps get developed, maybe they will push .net to the mandatory updates, just like .net framework is now (which is no longer getting new versions, only bug fixes and security updates).

Oh also, you can run .net 5 apps without having installed .net 5 on your pc, IF the app includes the .net 5 runtime.

Hope this cleared out some confusion (for me too, as I don't use .net lol)

Edit: apparently, for older .net (named .net core) versions, you do not need .net if the app is configured to use .net framework https://devblogs.microsoft.com/cesa...the-target-framework-monikers-tfms-are-about/

However, it seems that for newer .net versions, like the 5.0 version, you will need to download .net to be able to run that, and .net framework will not be sufficient anymore (as they are different things). At least, that's what I think. Not completely sure.
And a reminder that if the .net 5 app includes .net 5 runtime with it, you do not need to have the net 5.0 runtime installed to run the app.
