    Maybe they have changed something.
On my old notebook, Dell XPS 1350 (Core2-Duo/4Gb), it was a pain, when BD-free made updates.
Every hour one core was fully occupied for 10 minutes, and the fan was running at full speed.

I guess they did because I am using it on a 5 year old Dell Vostro with an i5-4210U CPU and 8 GB of RAM. I never hear any fans, heck I don't even notice it's there. What I do notice is that it's much lighter than Panda Antivirus which I just uninstalled.

That is very unusual. Usually Panda will be lighter.

Not according to my "feeling". Maybe I have no way of measuring it but I felt installing apps and regular browsing through the OS a tad snappier with Bitdefender although not anything earth shattering. Also the latest AC-C Performance test and the one before say the same = https://www.av-comparatives.org/comparison/?usertype=consumer&chart_chart=chart4&chart_year=2019&chart_month=10&chart_sort=1&chart_zoom=0

I'm not disputing your experience, it's just that usually Panda will be lighter. Panda is one of the few antiviruses which is pretty much always extremely light on any system I use it on, including ones with slow CPUs.
I often find that their results don't match my own personal experience.

No, it's still protection ON or OFF, but performance is vastly improved and no bugs found when I last used it. It's a great set-and-forget protection.

RAM usage is, with huge margin, the highest of all free antivirus solutions. Kaspersky Free (Security Cloud), AVAST, AVG, (even AVIRA allthough recent GUI changes and installer are terrible) all consume less RAM. Apart from RAM usage, installation is huge (more than 2 GBs) and options to control the programme are practically not existant. Protection ON-OFF, exclude, restore - that was it. OK, majority of users really don't need more but still relativelly high performance hit and spartan interface. CPU and HD usage during updates are still high (allthough better than before).
Edit: above mentioned Panda Free is lighter on resources than BitDefender Free, in my experience.

As I've stated a number of times before, memory usage by an antivirus, generally does not matter. Unless your system is short on RAM, then memory usage will not affect performance, and in some cases antiviruses using more memory perform better than ones keeping their memory usage low, because they are keeping data in RAM rather than regularly writing data back to the hard drive, to free up RAM, which actually hinders performance.

If you've got enough RAM installed, it is high CPU and or disk usage will cause performance issues. I never look at RAM usage by security software because it simply does not matter.

Well, RAM usage still matters to me. On 4GB laptop Windows 7 (for example) with Kaspersky, AVAST, AVG, Avira uses up to 1,15 GB, with Panda ca. 1 GB and with BDFree RAM usage jumps to ca. 1.5 GB after an hour or two. It is still light in terms of CPU usage (relatively low number of I/O requests) but not lighter than all mentioned programmes. Update is way better than before but still somewhat hogging CPU and hard drive. To be honest, every AV software does. For older machine with up to 4 GB RAM there are, in my opinion, more suitable free AV solutions. For PCs with more than 4 gigs BD Free is fine "install and forget" soluton, no doubt.

    I like Bitdefender Free.

Win Defender sometimes slows the computer down when I'm trying to do something, where Bitdefender overall seems lighter regarding system performance impact.

This isn't scientific, just my impression for what it's worth.

Appears to be powered by the same AV engine as the paid product:

OK thanks, so far I haven't noticed any slowdown issues with Win Defender. And I'm also not into web-filtering, Win Def doesn't do this AFAIK.

You can't set exclusions in the free version right?

That used to be the case, but you can add exclusions now! File, folder, or URL.
