I have been reading a bit more about Win 20H2 and a lot of people are having problems with it. On the other hand, I did read that Lenovo has tested this version and it should work correctly on Lenovo IdeaPad 3 laptops. Not sure yet what I'm going to do.

And I got lucky, because somehow I could uninstall certain updates and now the problem with high CPU usage by svchost.exe has been solved. But the Windows Store app still won't start and the Win Taskbar now also malfunctions. So it is and was 100% caused by this stupid update.

Well, a system reset will still be necessary for me, but at least I was able to solve the biggest problem. Perhaps all of this is caused by Edge which is now integrated in Win 10? If so, I will gladly go back to the original Win 10 1909 version. My motto is, don't try to fix stuff that isn't broken.

Also, for some reason VirustTotal Uploader won't launch the default browser anymore. I believe Win 10 has gotten way too complex, just look at all of those svchost.exe services that are running. And as a result, Win 10 is also way too fragile, seems like a simple update might already screw things up, shame on M$.

I have an Edge uninstaller for both the new Chromium-based one and the legacy one if you want

I only see AdGuard, Win Defender and OSA and besides you can always turn these apps off when updating Win 10. I'm running about 7 security tools in real time and my system has always been fast and stable, the thing that that did cause problems were those stupid Windows updates.

So you're saying that Edge can't be uninstalled in a normal way? Things are just getting better. Actually, I have got no beef with the new Edge, it's not that bad. However, I wonder if it has messed things up, so I rather install it myself when I go back to Win 10 1909 factory settings. I'm not going to do it via crappy Win Updates anymore.

So you are having zero problems? Can I ask what type of machine(s) you are using? And the thing that makes me want to do it, is that I won't have to reinstall and reconfigure all of my apps, plus in theory it might fix problems with the Win Taskbar, Win Explorer and UWP apps. Perhaps I should try it once, if it goes bad I will never update Windows again. Also, I hope that I can still go back to Win 10 1909 after this upgrade.

The reason you see all of those svchost.exe instances running is because some time back they split them up if you had sufficient RAM so that a lesser number of them wouldn't be handling multiple tasks. This should result in a more stable system. I have had no issues related to this.

I also manage 20 PCs on the most current release and do not have any real issues to speak of. Most of the problems you are experiencing are likely something to be blamed on 3rd party software. In the end it is your system to work with but I state again, I would take 20H2 or 21H1 over 1909 any day.

OK thanks, this does sound good.

In theory it can indeed be caused by third party tools, that's the tricky part. And what exactly didn't you like in 1909? It has always run stable for me. The biggest problems I had is the Windows Store not being able to install videogames and balloon notifications not being displayed in the Windows traybar. As said before, after installing a few updates, now a couple of other things are broken too, I should have known better. And to be honest, I don't see any interesting features in 20H2 and 21H1.

I just hate it that so many processes are running, it also makes it easier for malware to hide. Win 8.1 was way better when it comes to this. But I also don't have any performance issues on Win 10, but I do think it's more RAM hungry because of al of these processes. On Win 8.1 I have about 100 processes running including the browser, on Win 10 it's over 200 processes.

Ultimately the same amount of stuff is running as far as total apps. It actually does not make it easier for malware to hide. It makes it harder. Now when you open Process Explorer you can see svchost.exe running 1 or 2 process instead of 8 or so. Also if you have to kill an instance of it you will bring down 1 or 2 apps instead of 8 or 10. This makes it more stable as well since a faulty app could crash a svchost.exe thread hosting multiple apps instead of just the bad one. I remember being shocked the first time I spotted it but at this point I consider it the better option for the reasons I just stated. This is similar the the upcoming plan they have to separate the taskbar process from explorer.exe. More processes, more threads, more stable. Seriously since Windows went .NET nothing is memory or process efficient. I'll take stable and feel I am forced to throw hardware as the resource usage.

Let me get this straight: Windows was designed to be more thread-focused rather than process-focused to limit resource usage. After decades they decided to go UNIX way. In the name of security Windows is trying to become more multi-process OS abandoning overreliance on threads. Unfortunately by-design Windows process creation is more resource-heavy compared to Unix-like OSes (Linux, macOS).

Good point, I didn't think about it in this way. But still, Win 8 is just as stable as Win 10, so the question is did we really need it. Too much system processes running is never a good thing, they need to go back to the drawing board, because Win 10 has gotten way too complex. Probaly that's why system updates are causing so many problems. And what I meant is that normally I'm using Process Explorer to check for suspicious processes, but good luck trying to find them with over 200 processes that are running.

I have been thinking about this, and I'm not buying it. Remember, those updates did install correctly. Tools like O&O ShutUp and Spybot Anti-Beacon simply block Windows from communicating with certain M$ servers, so I don't see how they should be able to break the Win Taskbar and UWP apps like the Windows Store. Also, I didn't get a single alert from my security tools, most likely because they are designed to allow system processes to run freely.

For now I will wait, because another user has reported problems with the Sandboxie and SpyShelter combo on Win 20H2.
