BTW, call me crazy, but only since today I have noticed that AppCheck spawns the AppCheck.exe process every 2 minutes on my Win 8.1 system, are you guys also seeing this? I noticed this via the event-log in EXE Radar and I indeed saw it via Process Explorer. Why would AppCheck be doing this, any ideas?

The command line is (parent process = AppCheckS.exe):

BTW, on Win 10 I'm not seeing any stability problems and it also doesn't seem to spawn any appcheck.exe process every 2 minutes like on Win 8.1, so perhaps they fixed a couple of things. But do you perhaps know if Vivaldi is also protected by AppCheck's exploit blocker? And how to check it, does it inject a .dll file into running processes? Too bad that it doesn't give any indication, or does it?

    Hello!

Can you help me to decide? I'm trying to find a free anti ransomware app to complement Bitdefender free (as it lacks multilayered anti ransomware protection). I checked some videos on YouTube and decided to go with Malwarebytes Anti-Ransomware (beta), but after checking this thread, i was curious about the free version of AppCheck. Which one is better in this case?

    Ty guys!

Personal opinion: appcheck : Install and forget application. High detection rate plus exploit shield and zero bugs.

For" better," the dearth of ongoing and vigorous testing negates anything other than that of user experience and opinion based on trust in the developers' history, reputation and support. And the matter of any developer's history, reputation and support might also be... opinionated.

That said, in the niche market for stand-alone anti-ransomware protection, both products enjoy popular acclaim.

Consider that MBARW is in persistent beta. For the privilege of using it without charge, you are testing new and updated features and protections before Malwarebytes roll them into their premium Windows products as they do for their Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit Beta.

CheckMal releases its free AppCheck 24 hours in advance of the Pro version: "Version update time for the Pro is delayed maximum 24 hours to provide maximum stability." Source:
    https://www.checkmal.com/notice/read/362/

IMHO, AppCheck is far more feature rich and presents configuration options well above and beyond the On/Off of MBARW.

    Some folks want On/Off.

I've been using AppCheck Pro on Win7 Home and 10 Pro and Home systems for several years.

For a typical home user, are the default setting sufficient? This is assuming they're using W10H and using Windows Security. If not, what would you change?

If you have another drive or partition, it's recommended you create a folder and path there. Like mine:
    AppCheckRansomShelter.jpg
    Otherwise, leave it at default.
Depending on how much room you got, set a size limit or uncheck it.

If you're using Pro, add file extensions for special apps you might have, like pwkdat, rls, hc and the like.

    Has AppCheck become abandonware?
We haven't had an update in many months.
Initially updates for this great product were quite frequent.

I have no idea, but if it works, then it works. But yes updates are important because there are always new ransomware techniques that are showing up. And you could have asked this question in the AppCheck thread, perhaps some mod can move these posts.

    Hi @Rasheed187

Per your valid concern https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/appcheck-by-checkmal.391353/page-26#post-2977800 did you discover yet why 8.1 spawns the recurring process yet on Win 10 it doesn't?

Got an update to 2.5.51.9 the other day. Updates have rolled in consistently, but I haven't taken notes, so can't be more detailed.
AppCheck's changelog page isn't any help, not having been updated since November.
    There's another AppCheck thread??

To clarify, it was probably a problem with an older version of AppCheck, I've updated to 2.5.51.5 and I have no problems on both Win 8.1 and Win 10, it works smoothly.

OK so seems like they are only offering updates via auto-updating. And the post that I responded to was originally made in a new thread about AppCheck.

Sorry, I could have been more specific. By "got an update," I meant I checked for an update and got one, 2.5.51.9.

I don't auto-update anything; every week or two I check various apps manually, the more important ones (like AppCheck) more often, others (like CCleaner) not so much.

OK, this discussion, "AppCheck by CheckMal," is the only one about AppCheck. Are your referring to posts in another discussion as a thread? The terms discussion, thread and topic are loosely applied in the vast universe of forum software...

Better yet, how about a link to that "a new thread" you refer to? Thanks.

Got it. Thanks for your clarification on that. Cheers

OK I see, I also don't auto-update any app, I think it's a bad idea. And there is no new thread anymore, it has been removed and the posts have been moved to this thread.

one thing to notice is that you should whitelist other sec programmes like Wise Vector Stop X WVSX, especially WVSX

Difficult situation, it looks like we will not see any more updates to this good program. The support is not responding, although I have communicated with her several times before.

Cool that they are still alive, but a question to everyone, did AppCheck cause any CPU spikes with the System process? You can check this with Process Explorer for example. I also suspected it might have been caused by OSArmor and Sandboxie, but now I think both OSA and AppCheck are somehow causing this issue on both Win 8.1 and Win 10.

Didn't have this, use AppCheck and OSArmor and Win10 and Win8.1
