Bork Tuesday, Any Problems Yet?

JFYI, the update in question (optional) installed flawlessly. Btw, I didn't have any printing issues as I'm on OKI and Konica Minolta printers.

 

After i resumed updates the bad update started to download. I read about the new update, so i looked in optional updates and started to download the new one. I don't think the bad update installed because it is not listed under update history. The new update installed without any problems.

 

Note that KB5001567 to fix printer issues is an optional update. So you will have to check for Win Update manually assuming your threshold is Recommended updates.

A check for updates found the out-of-band KB5001649 which failed (3 times) to install (error 0x80070541).

A bad update from Microsoft?! No, that couldn't be.

 

I was thinking to try via Microsoft Update Catalog but I will wait for a while.

Confirmed: a manual install KB5001649 of works without any issues.

 

A new check for updates performed few minutes ago, KB5001649 is not listed anymore. Seems that MS pulled it back.

KB5001649 offered up again this morning. Not even trying to install it at this time.

 

I have never tried to hide a W10 update. Is is possible to hide this optional update.

I installed it on two machines. This time no error message.

Well today is Bork-day for me. I have two updates for Insiders Beta showing: one seems legit and one (KB 5000842) was installed last week and is attempting to install again--without success. So, I wushowhide it. Weird, when I restart after successfully d/l KB 5001460, instead of "installing" and the percentage, it's reading "cleaning up" and then 100%. But it did install what ever it was. Winver is still 19043.899 though. Nothing via Disk Cleanup to speak of.

I tried to change to light theme and re-do the snip but then the failed KB update isn't listed. Oh well.

 

They keep updating that patch. You won't move to 19043.906 until it updates it to the one released today.

 

This is a problem that will never get solved. There are what, a billion Windows devices worldwide? All of different age, from different manufacturers, with different 3rd party software, and different peripherals. Coupled with Microsoft turning over different developers of different experience levels.

Then the article complains about rebooting. Sure, it is inconvenient, but sometimes the need for a reboot is what is wrong with your device. This happens with printers and routers and other devices so it is not specific to Windows. Despite all of that I have not had any of the publicized issues with the latest patches.

If someone feels the "need to have a talk" with Microsoft it won't do any good unless you have the answers to the issues of which you complain. As the article points out, this has been going on since Windows 95. It's a side effect of trying to support every computing device ever made.

The only possible solution I can even think of would be to kill all backwards compatibility and force everyone to use the same devices moving forward. That would help. Probably a lot. It might not entirely solve it. Everyone would still complain. If it feels good to vent after a bad update, by all means do so. But this isn't going to change. Because it can't.

 

OK, understood. It doesn't complete the download, though; it goes to 10%, then "installs" then fails, over and over with error 0x800f081f which I searched online. Update troubleshooter "couldn't identify the problem." The latest version of this KB isn't in the update catalog either. I tried uninstalling the prior KB 80000842 and there's no way to do that from Control Panel. No integrity violations via sfc /scannow.

I un-hid it, though, and I'll let telemetry deal with it. It's actually kind of annoying as problems with updates on here are very rare.

 

No guarantees it will help but I would try to find the KB80000842.cab file on your hard drive and delete any copy found, then reboot and try again.
