Windows 7 certainly wins in terms of looks. Windows 10 is butt ugly in comparison. In performance, I've found Windows 8.1 to be the leanest and fastest by far except for Windows NT 4.0. I'm glad Windows NT 4.0 made the list. I used it and Windows 2000 well into the Xp era. With no plug and play, installing new hardware was painful but it also kept the system extremely stable. When all the Windows 95/98 users were experiencing daily crashes and reboots, NT 4.0 could keep going for weeks. Vista wasn't all that bad after SP2 if you had enough memory. Xp was great after SP2 but before that, I avoided it. The only good thing I'll say about Windows 10 is that it motivated me enough to finally move to using Linux as my main OS. Ads in the start menu and forced updates don't work for me. Then there is the matter of the way it looks. I just don't find the GUI all that pleasant to look at or work with and the various Linux desktops have all gotten much better over the years.

 

Ugh geez. On Windows 10 ugly. Fortunately for me when I do upgrade to buy a new machine, I been heavy into customizations since 98SE and there is not a single Windows version after I've owned where before I even bother to link it with the net where I completely rework the blighted looks and fashion it to look at least clean and eye candy professional viewable and not nerd kiddish.

And my current 8.1 is as your results. Lean and zippy as they come and thank the heavens no spy garbage like Windows 10 where they record even keystrokes somewhere inside it then shuffle out thru on of those many svchost running processes and others. Its disgusting they told users to bug off, either accept it our way or the highway.

 

Win 8.1 is very fast. Not DOS fast. No windows will ever approach that kind of speed, but faster than any other Windows I've used. As for looks, I don't care much what the desktop looks like, as long as it's there. And that goes to stability. Win 10 is fine and stable. Win 8.1 never blue screened in the couple of years I used it before falling for the siren song of Windows 10. I still have the OEM disc for 8.1, and it is tempting to spend half a day re-installing it. This time, I have all my software and their licenses.saved to an external, so no hunting would be necessary.

If I had a favorite version of windows, I guess I'd pick one that isn't Windows. I despised having to learn the commands, but most of my work is typing, and DOS with the great WordPerfect for DOS was fantastic. Totally impractical given the Internet now and today's printers but I loved it in its day.

 

I started out w/8.1 and looking at snips of these elderly operating system features, well sorry, it's like looking in a museum of circa 1800s living rooms or something. Well maybe not that extreme, but kind of close.

Disbelieving that 8.1 didn't make this list (right, but 8 did ). It was extremely stable (no crashes), even on a potato machine, and the desktop was nice to look at. A hybrid of 8.1 and 10 would be welcome: 8.1 for the looks, speed and stability and 10 for the rest. No, I do not want a 3rd party substitute. The real thing or nothing. OK, nothing it is.

 

I never used 8. I fooled with it one time, while I still had 7, and couldn't figure it out. Then, when I upgraded 7 Pro with the OEM disc that came with this machine, and got rid of the tiles, I figured out the charm things and all that.

Windows 8.1 is probably my favorite. End of Life is approaching, and I don't care. With proper security, it's probably good for the life of this laptop, should I decide to go back.

I did not like 7 for the reason I think I mentioned up above. On this laptop, and on my wife's, every single day there was at least one crash dump. She still has Win 7 and they're a daily occurrence. Never figured out the problem and don't bother anymore. She's learned to live with them, and won't upgrade due to old software she used that works on 7 but might not on newer operating systems.

 

I bought my current machine with Windows 8, and loved it. The upgrade to Win 8.1 brought speed and stability. Windows 10 is the state of the art, a speed demon, stable and secure. Windows 7 was great back in the day, it's almost like saying that a 1960 Ferrari was the best car ever made, technology is not like artwork, wine, or other items which are not inherently related to science, the latest is the greatest for operating systems albeit one might feel comfortable and familiar with an older one.

 

Windows 8 probably wasn't as bad as its reputation. What it was, was different. People didn't like the tiles, but of the couple of people I know who had it, and one still has it, they liked it once they learned to use it. For me, though I'm on 10 20H2 19042.868, I'm still partial to 8.1. It's faster than this version of 10 on this machine, and just as stable.

 

Microsoft can develop other OS, can't it? Or is it a tall order by being overstretched with its other ventures?

But, developing an operating system that blends everyone's favorite features from past ones is intriguing to me. If a hybrid 8.1/10 ever came out by Microsoft, I would buy it at full retail. No fooling, I def. would.

Some have weighed in at me that MS couldn't name a version 9 for some odd reason that still doesn't make a lick of sense to me. Why skip?

Glad you mentioned that. Which IMO is proof positive makes zero sense. (as if MS ever does any longer).

If they can use 95 and 98 as versions they also could easily made a straight nice round number 9.0.

 

I've read that Windows 9x series was based on the 95 kernel and Windows 95 was the first
of that series succeeded by Windows 98 and then Windows Me.
PC World called its last version, Windows Me, one of the worst products of all time.

yep, driver files failure. At least just numbers, why windows "7", or "8". I am not sure if it was the 7th or 8th release of a windows, I count some more.

 

Actually the problems were lazy developers that checked Windows Version by string and their software would think Windows 9 was Windows 95... Microsoft detected this during tests and the easiest solution was to skip version 9 and go straight to 10.

 

Well, given the various upgrades of Win 10, MS ought to be at Windows 13 by now.

 

I did but they were easily dealt with, mostly unwanted apps showing up in the start menu that came with ads. The lack of control is what moved me away from Windows 10. No real control over the update process, the start menu apps had their own update process and both would suck bandwidth in huge gulps. That is really unforgivable. My various Linux systems only update when I initiate the process and don't do background downloading. Not to mention the fact that they are leaner and faster. Only Windows 8.1 comes close in terms of speed and no version of Windows comes anywhere near the low resource usage by the OS. That being said, even Linux Distros are getting worse in that regard. The days of Ubuntu 14 and related Mint versions using less than a gigabyte of ram are gone.

And those are exactly great points and 100% spot on.

User's have plenty enough trouble since now even once readable websites are worse than old coolwebsearch if anyone remembers them. Websites suck bandwidth like a tornado anymore.

 

If we don't consider W.7 it is possible to estimate the success of the previous OS based on how much they are used today.

In this regard, the greatest diffusion is for:

• Windows XP

and

• Windows Vista

followed by:

• Windows 98
• Windows 2000

Forgot that Windows 8 got same update packages, and also telemetry routines similar to windows 10? Windows 8 updates are same big. And windows 7 no longer gets some if not paid ESU (i dont speak about the illegal use).

The start menu is idd crap, but there is option to replace it. even on windows 7 the start menu is not that "nice" as in XP - that was time for rising tools like "True Launch Bar". Microsoft broke it first time here, not in Windows 10.

And no you did not lose control, you only need to disable some more - moreover anybody used xp antispy, today its ShutUp, where is the fkn difference?

W10 used to add new & varied telemetries each update? Don't know if it still does that though.
