Well, that banner disappeared. It may have been after the most recent update or later, didn't notice. But now, it's decent, not so cluttered.

are you sure it's not because you've resized its window? because in my settings app it's still there. :cautious:

Thanks for the tips. The updates went smoothly, an auto-restart or two, and the machines are behaving well.

Installed KB4598481 latest SSU and KB4601319, another CU to 20H2, bringing me to 19042.804 on a desktop and laptop.
Previews and driver updates are blocked in group policy.

The 'Windows Update' function is also at the top of the Settings panel now, and also still farther down in my Settings panel.

I resized it before posting to check. It's literally gone. Maybe the Settings Fairy came by and went "Poof." :)

I'll keep an eye out for any observations on this. I'm running winver 19043.844 (Insiders beta). I'll enjoy it while it lasts cuz it may come back later.

Well, I'm thrilled to announce that the Banner at the top of my Settings app mysteriously returned. :cautious: Can't chalk it up to KB5000802 and the Malicious Software Removal Tool either as it showed up prior. No problems w/updating at all but nothing to delete via Disk Cleanup. File Explorer is reporting 2.5 GB missing as usual. Only got back 680 MB via deleting some contents of the Software Distribution folder.

Winver on here is 19043.867 (Insiders Beta :thumb:)

Further to KB5000848, another update KB4589212 (Intel microcode updates for Windows 10, version 2004 and 20H2) installed today in my laptop & desktop.
Ok, the laptop has Intel processor, but my desktop has AMD, strange.....

Speaking of Microcode Updates. Anyone here uses InSpectre? I turn off the Meltdown/Spectre patches to get the max performance. I could care less about this vulnerability with the security setup that I have.

What about this one: (but you will be unable to uninstall the updates if needed at a later stage). I got my space back by using it:

    Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase

My PC is faster enough to handle it: (I guess this is because i8700k supports INVPCID instruction).

On Windows 10 the impact should be even lower since 10 uses Retpoline.

But I am with a few microcode updates behind since I am still on Windows 8.1, and they are available through Windows Update only on Windows 10 and AsRock didn't release a new BIOS since 2019 for Z370 Extreme4. However, I am not worried since most of these attacks needs physical access to succeed anyway.

When i disable meltdown/spectre it does not seem to work. The GUI still says it is protected from them.

Thanks alot, this did recover another 1 GB or so but I installed other stuff in the interim so who knows if I got it all back. Ironically, I've used this command before and forgot about it. :)

You disable one, then either gets reenabled, then you disable the other, then reboot. They should then both be disabled. Please try and let me know.
