Maybe it's only in the US then. There have been plenty of posts about it at the Norton forums - can't activate without entering card details.
I bought my key from Newegg to upgrade from NIS when my subscription expired. There was no way to activate without giving Norton my card. I immediately cancelled automatic renewal, and if I remember correctly, deleted my card from my Norton Account.
I'll see what happens in October when I purchase another license. But right now I have auto-renewal disabled.
Did you buy Norton Security, or is it the New N360 with VPN included? Not the old VPN-less version they had before (Standard or Premium, or the even older v1 through to v6).
That could also be why perhaps. I think it mainly affects activating the New N360, but I could be wrong.
Believe me, they still have all that information even if you deleted that information from your account. https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/norton-very-shady-billing-practices.432072/#post-2944203 I activated a very old Norton license I got from newegg without VPN and it didn't ask for any credit card information. BUT, now I'm receiving weekly emails from them to upgrade to the new N360. Btw: the emails have NO Unsubscribe Button which IMHO is very shady business. I've uninstalled Norton and their emails are going directly into my spam box.
Paying for security only makes sense in corporate environment. AV won't protect you from stupid decisions. But if there are people willing to pay, why not take more from them? I guess that's Symantec's point of view.
Just for the heck of it I pulled one of those emails out of my spam folder to upgrade to N360 for FREE. I hit the upgrade for free which took me to my Norton Account. I had to sign into the Account and after signing in I got this: I guess Norton Has to charge you something (even though they say it's FREE) to get your credit card information including your address information. WoW talk about Shady.
Sounds like they are trying to kill the company. Too bad people still buy this because of name recognition of a man that has not had anything to do with this product for probably about 20 years now.
On page 17 of this report you can see that several vendors do it in such a way nowadays: https://www.av-comparatives.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/avc_sum_202012_en.pdf
Webroot does the same but they make it easy to Opt-out: https://www.webroot.com/us/en/auto-renewal-optout
Because of Microsoft's ineptitude, Windows has MANY more security "leaks" than does Linux. IMO, using Windows Defender is like hiring a mechanic from the same company that sold you a Yugo. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I assume Norton doesn't offer an option to pay via PayPal. Correct? I have NEVER paid for any subscription account that wouldn't accept PayPal. So far, I have never had a problem.
Hi bellgamin, Most of the time I like your quotes, but if you don't like Windows Defender, you should at least refrain keeping bashing it. It's definitely not very constructive. This is my opinion, no offend.
